What We Did on A Windy Day in Woolacombe

Another windy day here in Woolacombe, North Devon, but thankfully, the torrential rain that I wrote about yesterday was no more.
We knew the wind was to become stronger during the middle of the day, so thought it wise to go to Woolacombe beach in the morning so avoiding the worst of the weather later on.

Once again layers, (including a jumper), were in order.

Floral pull-on trainers, What Lizzy Loves

For a second consecutive day, we went to The Beachcomber Cafe...

...but today braved sitting outside on the terrace so we could take in the beach and breathe in the sea air. To describe it as bracing would be something of an understatement.

Later this afternoon, we drove to Croyde, a pretty town full of thatched cottages. It lies just a few miles away.
I booked a table for supper at The Kings Arms in Georgeham upon the recommendation of one of my daughter's friends who holidayed in Woolacombe last week, so I took the opportunity to get changed before we went. Georgeham lies between Croyde and Woolacombe on a very narrow country road.

I couldn't resist the yellow flowers in Georgeham village car park.

I had ham, egg and chips and a rather nice Verdejo which the lovely young lady behind the bar recommended and allowed me to taste before ordering.

It is a truly fabulous pub.

A Tale of Two Beaches

Today has been a day spent doing what we came here to do. Walk, talk, have fun on the beach and enjoy each other's company.

It was still a little windy and not really warm enough for shorts, but it was mainly dry and the sun put in a very welcome appearance.

We took a leisurely stroll along the length of Woolacombe Beach after breakfast, where we saw a seagull with attitude...

...and a beach hut with my name on.

This view looks towards the centre of Woolacombe.

And this is going in the opposite direction.

My son was keen to repeat sprint races from our last holiday here when there was nothing between us.

What a difference two years makes.

I was only "a little" dishevelled afterwards.

At the end of Woolacombe Beach is Putsborough Beach where there is a small cafe, the perfect place for a light lunch, after which we strolled back again.

Precious, precious times.
We'll all take such happy memories from today.

I mentioned in my first Woolacombe blog post that within twenty minutes of arriving here, we were on Barricane Beach ordering Sri Lankan curry from the renowned beach cafe there.
We returned yesterday evening because it was dry and sunny, though still very windy as the photo of my son swimming (yes swimming, without a wetsuit) will attest.

Today has been the sunniest so far and I actually wore shorts.
With a jumper.
And a hoodie.

After brunch at the Beachcomber Cafe, an almost daily haunt, we went to the beach, hired a windbreak and set up camp for the day. It was windy and on the cool side and my poor children sat huddled in beach towels, determined to spend the day by the sea.

We changed for the evening and went out for supper.

My jeans are a very recent purchase and I'm thrilled with them. I'd been looking for something paler and more casual than my favourite skinnies and these tick all the boxes. My gorgeous top is one I've had for almost two years, yet it's the first time I've worn it. It was sent to me as a thank you for one of the very first blog collaborations I ever did way back when. I absolutely adore the feminine broderie anglaise detail.

We ate at The Tides Inn where Wednesday night is curry buffet night. This was perfect for my hungry children and we enjoyed the friendly, laid back yet bustling atmosphere there. The food was lovely- a choice of the curries with naan, poppadoms, rice and chutneys.

Such a beautiful evening and for the first time since our arrival on Saturday, the sea looked calm.

Today has been brilliant. The sun shone for most of the day and we actually sat on the beach without hoodies.
We brunched at GJs pancake bar, (a favourite from when we were here two years ago), and then stayed on Woolacombe beach until late afternoon.

Because it was such a glorious evening, we decided to go to our favourite Barricane Beach Cafe for another Al Fresco Sri-Lankan curry supper.

I have got some new sunglasses and I'm thrilled with them. It always comes as a surprise to my friends that as an optometrist by profession and as a lover of all accessories, I had until I got these a matter of weeks ago, only one pair of sunglasses. These are by Tommy Hilfiger at Specsavers.
I visited the Leeds branch to choose these, (Specsavers are all franchises), and I was looked after by Aga, a charming Polish optical assistant who now follows my blog and with whom I have a reciprocal relationship on Instagram. It's things like this that make blogging very, very special.

The Barricane Beach Cafe is unlicensed, so taking one's own is part of the fun.

I'm definitely a glass half full girl, but either way, it still needs filling up, does it not?

Today was the final day proper of our holiday in Woolacombe. Tomorrow we face the long drive home so will leave early doors.

It's been the most wonderful experience. The first holiday alone with my children. We've had a busy and, on occasions, difficult few months so I felt particularly in need of some time with them to relax, to talk and to enjoy the company of the two beautiful, intelligent young people who fill my life in equal measures with utter love, pride, joy, mess and stress.
This week has achieved all of the above and more. It's been perfect and I feel quite tearful at the thought of going home.

Their favourite haunt for brunch was the Beachcomber Cafe, so it seemed fitting to eat there this morning, on the balcony, overlooking Woolacombe Beach. The chocolate milkshake is to die for.

We sat on the beach all day and chatted about anything and everything. It was lovely to converse for several hours without the almost ubiquitous distractions of social media, i-devices and games consoles.
We played hunt the buried flip-flop and dodge the seagull(s). We ate chips and ice-cream and paddled among hundreds of tiny jellyfish.

I cannot remember spending a happier day with my children and today is one I will remember for a long time.

The evening was also beautiful so once again, we headed to Barricane Beach for Sri-Lankan curry and to enjoy the warm, laid-back atmosphere that this most popular of beach cafes has to offer.

My son skimmed stones until the sun began to fade on what has been the most precious of weeks with my children.

I'm still in love with this romantic pink lace top so wore it with shorts and sandals this evening.

What I Wore on Holiday in Devon

$

0
It's clear to see from the first and last outfits that I wore on holiday last week, that the weather in Devon was somewhat changeable.
Our first full day, Sunday, saw us wrapped in layers and waterproofs and trying to avoid the howling wind and driving rain. The weather improved steadily as the week progressed and Friday saw us sitting on the beach all day, without needing a windbreak and warm enough in the evening to wear shorts and a lightweight top.

Packing for a UK beach holiday is tricky.

I knew what to expect from the weather forecast so packed accordingly to cover every eventuality. But, and I'm certain I won't be alone in this, I over packed (big time) and probably wore less than half of what I took. So I thought it might be useful to see what I wore over the course of the week and to perhaps make it a little easier for anyone else going on a similar type of holiday.
It'll also to serve as a reminder to myself for next time not to take so much and to make life easier when packing the (smallish) car boot.

We drove down from North Yorkshire on Saturday morning, a journey which took seven hours excluding a stop at Gloucester Services on the M5. I'm giving specifics because it was possibly the nicest, most upmarket service station I have ever visited. It's a farmshop with a cafe as well as a coffee and snack bar and a lovely gift shop. It made the stop so much more pleasant.
I correctly anticipated a lot of stop-start driving through several lots of roadworks on both the M6 and M5 so I made sure my shoes were comfy and not too heavy. Being comfortable is important when having to sit in one position and concentrate for prolonged periods so I wore a breton top, my yellow brogues and my least skinny skinny jeans.

My children and I stayed in a self-catering apartment opposite Woolacombe Beach and I knew we'd be mostly eating out. Having been before, I knew the vibe was very laid-back and relaxed, reflecting the beach and surfing culture. Flip flops, shorts and hoodies are de rigeur, even in bars, cafes and restauants. But even though I knew this, I still packed two dresses just in case as well as several smarter tops. Needless to say they didn't leave the wardrobe.

As I said above, Sunday was wet and windy. I wore a breton top, high-waisted skinny jeans and brogues, topped off with a rain jacket. My yellow handbag serves almost as a neutral and I wear it with numerous outifts several times a week. The brogues, being leather, are waterproof to a certain extent, so were a good choice for the rain. I did want to dress the outfit up a little so added a statement necklace that has bright yellow accents to compliment my bag.
I could have managed perfectly well without these jeans, wearing them only once.

What Lizzy Loves. Breton, skinny jeaans, yellow brogues, statement necklace
Blog Post:What I wore and what we did when it rained in Woolacombe

Monday was very windy, particularly in the afternoon. We spent a short time on the beach and then took refuge in a cafe for hot chocolate and cake, the therapeutic value of which should not be underestimated, especially when with a 14 year old and a 12 year old. I wore a jumper, casual skinny jeans (my least skinny skinny jeans as worn for travelling), and pull-on trainers.

What Lizzy Loves. Mint cable jumper, jeans and floral pull-on trainers

I'd booked a table at a pub in a neighbouring village for Monday evening and as much as the outfit above would have been more than smart enough, I do like to get changed in the evening when on holiday and eating indoors (rather than eating at the beach cafe). I changed into a pretty broderie anglaise top and added tan leather sandals, a gold dragonfly pendant and gold wrap bracelet.

Tuesday was still a little windy but dry and warmer than the previous two days. We spent the day walking along the beach and having races. Casual skinny jeans, a breton in a slightly heavier weight cotton and flip flops were ideal I also added a scarf.

By Wednesday, the sun had come out sufficiently for me to wear shorts. I kept the lightweight sweater on all day and needed to add a hoodie too when sitting on the beach.

What Lizzy Loves. Baby blue jumper, lemon vest, denim shorts and floral pull-on trainers
Blog Post:My outfits and a tale of two curries.

Again, for the evening, my shorts and jumper would have not looked out of place, but I decided to get changed because we were to eat at a cafe bar. I'm thrilled with these cropped jeans. they were a recent sale purchase and exactly what I'd been looking for.

What Lizzy Loves. Broderie anglaise tunic top, pale cropped jeans, yellow bowling bag and silver sandals

Thursday was a beautifully sunny yet breezy day and we spent it on the beach. I wore my denim shorts and yellow vest and on this occasion, only needed the hoodie when paddling. The sea breeze was really quite chilling.
We ate on the beach in the evening so I rewore clothes from earlier in the week. Cropped jeans, mint green jumper and pull-on trainers along with some some fabulous new sunglasses.

What Lizzy Loves. Mint green cable jumper, pale cropped jeans, floral slip-on trainers
Blog Post: Outfit- sunglasses because the sun shone.

Friday was sunny, warm and calm and again, we spent the day on the beach and wore my denim shorts again with a different vest top and flip flops.
Our last evening was spent eating on the beach where it was warm enough for me to wear my blush lace top with jeans and sandals.

What Lizzy Loves. Blush lace top, denim shorts and silver sandals
Blog Post: Outfit. Blush pink lace top and denim shorts.

I took a minimum of accessories, all of which wore, (all outfit details and pictures are on the individual blog posts, the links to which are under each photo).
The wrap bracelets are brilliantly lightweight and comfortable and went with every single outfit.

I could have managed without the cream and red bag. I took it because it's the prize I got for winning the Bonprix bikini style challenge and I wanted to use it. I'm delighted with it.
The navy and mint green tote bag was invaluable as a beach bag. I use it frequently both as an overnight bag and as a laptop bag too when out and about.

I could have managed without the tan sandals too. I only wore them once and the silver ones would have worked just as well with that particular outfit.

So, what to pack for a UK beach holiday when the weather is changeable?

This is what I would take, from the items mentioned above for the same holiday next time. (It is worth pointing out that there was a washing machine in the apartment and that the list would have been more extensive if I hadn't have been able to wash things midweek!).

1x rain jacket
1x heavyweight zip up hoodie
2x jumpers
2x long sleeved (or 3/4 length sleeved) breton tops.
2x vest tops suitable for layering but also for wearing out
2x dressier tops for evenings
1x skinny jeans
1x cropped jeans
1x denim shorts
1x leather brogues for wet weather
1x silver sandals
1x slip-on trainers
1x flip flops
1x beach bag
1x handbag
1x statement necklace
1x statment pendant
1x silver wrap bracelet
1x gold wrap braceket
1x scarf
1x sunglasses

Beauty: The Best Handcream I've Ever Used

$

I'm a little bit lazy when it comes to hand and nail care and really don't take care of them as much as I should, although I always put hand cream on before bed. I find a lot of hand creams leave a greasy residue so tend to avoid them during the day.

So when I was offered the opportunity to try two from Roger & Gallet, each with the promise of  "a non-sticky texture that immediately merges with the skin" I was interested to see if that was indeed the case.

The pink tube is Fleur-de-Figuier. It offers 24 hour hydration and has a mattifying effect when applied to the skin. It's enriched with indulgent ingredients including fig extract, shea butter and aloe vera and is ideal for normal to very dry skin.
The scent is lovely, quite fruity. This feels very rich but not heavy or greasy in any way and was velvety smooth in texture.

The red tube is Bienfaits. Enriched with shea butter, aloe vera, vegetable glycerin and apricot kernel oil, this hand cream promises to nourish, tone and protect the hands. It also contains extracts of red fruits blackcurrant, pomegranate, cranberry, blueberry and cherry.
This smells absolutely divine. Quite musky with a hint of citrus and is my favourite out of the two fragrances. This is such a gorgeous product and one I now can't imagine not using.

Both creams live up to expectation. They are non-greasy and do indeed merge into the skin, so much so that I use them during the day too.

I received them almost four months ago and have used them at least twice daily. First the Fleur-de-Figeur and after it ran out, the Bienfait.
The tubes are 50ml and a little goes a long way and the tube didn't squash as it emptied. In fact on the photo, the pink tube is completely empty.

Trying them for this length of time has enabled me to see a visible difference in the texture of my skin. It appears a little smoother and feels more supple. I've been doing a lot of gardening and DIY of late and my nails have survived remarkably well.

I highly recommend these Roger & Gallet hand creams and I think £6 for a 50ml tube which lasts 2-3 months makes these an affordable luxury.

And speaking of nails, isn't it nice when the smoothie matches the nail polish?

My children and I are going to see my parents today, back in my home town of Preston. We're staying the night and spending tomorrow with them too. I'm meeting some friends for Tapas this evening also in Preston, something I'm very much looking forward to. I had a lovely last night with two friends who I met post-natally when each of our daughters was just a few weeks old. Fourteen years, a second child each and two house moves later, they remain two of my closest friends and it's always an absolute joy to meet up with them when I'm back in my home town of Preston where they both live.
We went for Italian Tapas (which was definitely different to antipasti or Spanish tapas) and caught up properly on the last few months' worth of news.

My dress is new and is a sale purchase from a few weeks ago. I have a lot of tunic dresses. They are very versatile and can be worn with flats, heels, ankle boots or wedges. This particular dress could also be teamed with black opaque tights for the cooler months.
As always, I was attracted by the broderie anglaise and I particularly like the nude under-layer.

I started with a glass of Prosecco...

I've been in Liverpool for the past day or two with my man. My children are having a ball staying with my parents, so I rest easy knowing they're as happy as I am.
Each time I visit, I see more and more of his stunning home town and everything it has to offer. It couldn't be more different than my own stomping ground of dry-stone walls, hills and sheep.
How lucky we both are to have the best of town and country on our respective doorsteps.

Yesterday, Friday, we went into the city centre and lunched at Chaophraya, a Thai restaurant in Liverpool One.
My chicken satay starter (along with the rest of the meal) was divine.

The washrooms are quite spectacular, having an aquarium running through.

Attached to the restaurant is the Palm Sugar Lounge Bar, which boats a 15 metre granite bar and some quite stunning Swarovski crystal chandeliers.

And the views from our hotel (the stay, a very early birthday present from said man), were nothing short of spectacular as the sun set.

And I could have stayed in this window seat forever.

I'm very thankful to have a job I love (writing for and editing a local magazine). I work from home in the main, but I do go and meet local people about whom (or about their business) I then write a feature. Today was one such day. This morning I visited an upholsterer in his studio workshop and this afternoon I met with sports massage therapist at her clinic. I love the diversity of the job and I have learned so much about so many different things. Every day's a school day and I never tire of it.

I wore my little navy dress with silver sandals and a single silver bracelet for what I hope is a relaxed but professional look.

Beauty: Amphora Aromatics Deodorant

Deodorant isn't something I devote much thought to. So long as it works and doesn't leave marks on my clothing, I'm happy. I'm not loyal to a particular brand and tend to choose a roll-on with little or no fragrance.

I never thought I'd get excited about what is essentially a functional product, but I've been using the Lemongrass and Lavender deodorant from Amphora Aromatics and it's a bit of a game-changer. In fact, I love it.

The fragrance is absolutely beautiful. Citrussy, refreshing and uplifting. Importantly, it doesn't contain aluminium, alcohol or synthetic parfums. Both lemongrass and lavender are highly regarded deodorising oils and attack the bacteria responsible for causing body odour so no artificial ingredients are needed. Always good to know.

And...most importantly, it works.

I reviewed the Amphora Aromatics Seaweed and Aloe Eye Gel a month or so ago and was equally impressed. You can read about it here.

I can't believe it's Friday already. The days are flying by. It's been a busy and exciting week work wise. I was lucky enough to have had a beauty treatment and a sports massage, reviews of which will be in the October issue of Aspire Magazine. I've also been writing my fashion column and am working on several other pieces for it too.

This was yesterday's outfit. I'm so pleased with the cropped jeans and pull on trainers, both of which were sale purchases and both of which are rapidly becoming ubiquitous. But I'd rather that than have them languish unworn in the wardrobe.

Inspirational Women: Jane Gibson, Author of A Different Reflection.

In my role as writer and editor at Aspire, I am privileged to read and write about many inspirational people, all local to me and many of whom have quite a story to tell.

One such woman is Jane Gibson, a company secretary, housewife and mother to two boys, aged 17 and 15. Jane has written for enjoyment since her sons were young and dreamed of being a published author since her eldest boy was 4 years old.

Four years ago, Jane found out she had breast cancer. A year of treatment and operations made her completely reassess life and what she wanted from it.
One of those things was to make her dream become a reality. At 42 years of age, she decided it was time to share her stories with others.  She turned the negatives from that challenging time into positives and used her time to write. She put all her efforts, energy and focus into getting her writing published.

To her delight, Jane’s first novel, “A Different Reflection” was published in May this year.

She said, “The world of publishing is a difficult one to get into and with the added worry of rejection it is quite a personal endeavour, but I felt that was part of the journey. It has been an exciting experience and completely satisfying and I hope that this novel is the first of many.”

Jane very kindly sent a copy to me and it is an excellent read. I won't give too much away but it's a a romance with a difference. The main character Kat is a journalist who finds herself reflecting on her life and her relationship when she visits a grand old house and its occupants about whom she is writing. There is a crossover in genres to fantasy or fairy tale perhaps which appealed to my romantic nature.

If you're looking for an uplifting summer read that is a little different, written in a laid back, relaxed style, then this book ticks all the boxes.

As you probably know, (because I may have mentioned it on the odd occasion), I moved into a brand new house at the end of last year and have been slowly adding decorative touches to reflect my personality and to make it feel like it's truly mine.

I recently added some shelves in the utility room. It was during this particular project that I drilled into a water pipe so progress was somewhat thwarted for several days while the remedial replastering and repainting dried. I was more than a little tentative when I resumed, but all went well and I'm delighted with the result.
The top shelf is a floating shelf (Lack, from Ikea). I've put up quite a few now in various rooms and they look very neat once in-situ.

Beneath that is a picture ledge, also from Ikea. I have these in several rooms in the house and they are as perfect for displaying candles, trays, little jars or vases as they are for displaying the pictures for which they were designed.

I've been trying to give the garden some personality too. My friend Annemarie is a gardener by profession and has very kindly given me a lot of plants grown from seed or taken from cuttings from the plants in her own beautiful garden.

Knowing my love of a good up-cycling project, she gave me this cast iron garden furniture as it was superfluous to her requirements. She advised me that there was a little bit of flaking paint but that it was otherwise solid, functional and very comfortable.

I have got quite a lot of white in my home. The internal walls are painted white and it's a theme I wanted to continue outside so I decided to paint them white.
I sanded the table and chairs down and applied a white primer. I left it to dry overnight and then used three cans of white spray paint to get full and even coverage. It was quick and easy, though I did look a little Jackson Pollock once I'd finished.

The furniture looks totally different in white and I couldn't be more pleased with it or more grateful to have received it.

And the sun even shone for a few days.

I spent a wonderful morning at RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate on Monday. The weather was perfect and my children and I ambled through the glorious gardens before stopping going to Betty's Tearoom to refuel. I will be publishing a full blog post on Friday of this week which will be full of gorgeous photographs, but here are few (and I couldn't resist sharing a few on Instagram and Facebook.)

I wore my Boden Eliza tunic dress. I have found it to be incredibly versatile having worn and styled it differently on several different occasions throughout the year. The vibrant print seemed perfect for a day which was filled with colour.

Days Out: RHS Harlow Carr, Harrogate

Earlier this week my children and I went to RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate. It's only a forty minute drive from where I live in Skipton and just a matter of minutes away from the centre of Harrogate.

It was a gorgeously sunny day so was perfect for ambling leisurely through the gardens.

One of the first sights was this carpet of wildflowers. I was absolutely mesmerised and stood for quite some time taking in the sight. I honestly don't think I have ever seen such a beautiful display of flowers.

There were so many busy bees. Literally hundreds buzzing around. Such a good sight to behold.

Aged 14 and 12, my children, understandably weren't quite as excited as I was about the prospect of the visit but they both enjoyed the open space and, perhaps without even realising, the tranquility and peace it afforded. They were particularly captivated by the fauna and my daughter took some brilliant photographs on her phone including the bee on the stunning orange flower below.

The vegetable garden was equally fascinating...

...I hadn't seen an aubergine growing in this country before.

There's a large Betty's tearoom and Cafe. A Yorkshire institution, Betty's is quaint, elegant and terribly British.

After much deliberating, I opted for a Yorkshire ham and Gruyere roll and homemade raspberry lemonade...

...and a fondant fancy. The children had a hot chocolate and a biscuit which didn't last long enough for me to photograph.

After lunch I visited the gift shop which has garden section and a very good selection of books, candles, cards, candles and gifts.

We went on a sunny day in the summer holidays so the car parks were almost full and there were a lot of visitors. The gardens are so spacious though that it felt like I'd escaped into floral paradise. It didn't feel at all busy.
We lunched quite early at Betty's which we were glad about because the queue reached out of the door by the time we left, so that is worth considering especially if accompanied by permanently hungry children.
I enjoyed every moment of our visit and would love to see it throughout the different seasons. I'm fortunate to live just a short drive from these beautiful RHS gardens.

This post was written in collaboration with Think Money, a brilliant website with lots of ideas for days out, all with a budget of £40.
Entrance costs £9.85 for adults and £4.95 for children aged 5-16, a total of £19.75 for us.
Our food and drinks in Betty's cost £19.25, so the total cost for our day out was £39.00.

Outfit: Striped Dress with a Statement Necklace

I had a lovely day on Thursday when my cousin came to visit along with two of her children. We are very close beause our mothers, along with their brother, are triplets. We each have two younger brothers, so in many ways, have a sisterly relationship which is very special.

I wore a new dress from Dash, a brand which had fallen off my radar until recently. It's undergoing a revamp so I'm excited to see more of the new designs. I think they'll be just up my street.

The dress is an easy to wear shape and very versatile. I had planned on wearing it with tan accessories but decided to wait for that until Autumn.

This dress is a perfect trans-seasonal choice.
