Outfit: Pattern Mixing - Stripes, Leopard Print and Palm Leaves

$

A quiet day at home today interspersed with a few errands in town, cutting the grass and a bit of work. It was, for the first time in a while, tee shirt weather, although I was glad of the extra layer my scarf afforded when outdoors.

I love mixing patterns, stripes being a particular favourite when worn with florals or leopard.

Today's outfit contains three different patterns along with rose gold and diamante jewellery and (leopard) printed pony skin sandals.
It sounds very busy, but because there are only two main colours in the palette- blue and taupe, everything blends and compliments. The separate elements don't clash or compete.

I absolutely love this heart pendant. The soft rose gold is subtle and although the design is simple, it still makes a statement.

And the taupe coloured diamantes on this plaited wrap bracelet whisper rather than shout about their sparkle.

My Favourite Spring Outfits

I can't quite believe it's the start of June, so it's time to take a look back at my favourite spring outfits. I'm not of course suggesting that it is now anything resembling summer, although the forecast does look promising, but I class March, April and May as the spring months.
The weather has been changeable to say the least and this is reflected in the clothes (and actually in the wet ground) on so many of these photographs!

As well as looking at the outfits, I've been looking back at my blog in general. Two recent posts, both from May are two of the most read posts I have ever published (the third is the post showing how I transformed my spare bedroom into a dressing room).

In the first,  my blog's second birthday, I talked about the huge emotional and practical life changes that the last year or so has brought.

In the second, I stood outside in the rain, in a bikini.

I debated long and hard about each of these posts, because both were revealing in different ways. I'm glad I did though and the lovely comments made me realise beyond doubt that it was a risk worth taking.

Thank you.

Daydreaming: Of A Perfect British Beach Outfit.

$

I've been thinking for a while that I need a practical bag for when we go walking and for when I watch my son play in football tournaments. Such tournaments can last several hours and we "soccer moms" find ourselves transporting our boys' drink bottles, snacks, and in my case, spare goalkeeping gloves from pitch to pitch. It's often muddy and I'm reluctant to put a bag down on the ground.
I think a backpack is the answer.

There are some beautiful leather ones and some equally beautiful oilcloth ones, but it was this one from Fjallraven caught my eye. It's practical and designed for "proper" outdoor use, yet is streamlined and stylish. The colour, soft sand, led me on to dream about going to the beach again one day soon perhaps for a picnic and a walk along the shore. I loved my day out on Crosby beach last week and I'm yearning to go back.  It also thought how well it would go with my palm leaf scarf.
Khaki is one of this season's key colours, not something I have much of in my wardrobe because I find it quite utilitarian, but this beautiful embellished top adds the requisite feminine detail to keep this girly girl happy.

The weather has been changeable to say the least recently, with hail, wind, rain and sunshine, sometimes all within half an hour, so it makes planning days out and outfits a little difficult.

But wouldn't this be the perfect outfit for a day on a British beach right now?

How to Choose The Right Bikini.

$

In this month's Aspire, my fashion column is about choosing the right bikini and finding the perfect beach cover up so I thought I'd share a different version of the article here on my blog...

A summer holiday is often the most anticipated event in the calendar, but shopping for swimsuits and bikinis can be daunting.

Follow these six steps and get ready to shine.

1. Be prepared to try on lots of different styles and colours and don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You may just find the perfect silhouette.

2. If you're between sizes, opt for the smaller. Bikinis and swimsuits expand when wet.

3. Make use of ties and straps. Go tighter than you think, lean forward and keep adjusting until the bust is covered and you feel confident and secure.

4. More fabric does not necessarily mean more flattering coverage. The extra fabric will draw attention to the area you wish to conceal. Try something less demure, especially with bikini bottoms.

5. Choose a cover-up that is both stylish and functional.

A sarong is a simple wrap that ties at the waist and covers the thighs and tummy. It can be draped around the shoulders if the sea breeze takes hold and folded up to use as a pillow if the Sea-Breeze of the alcoholic variety takes hold...

Tunics and kaftans are collarless long sleeved tops usually made of lightweight fabric. They are often brightly coloured, patterned and embellished and can be dressed up with strappy sandals and jewellery to move effortlessly from beach to bar.

Slip Dresses do just that- slip easily over the head. From mini to maxi, anything goes. Halterneck, strapless and empire line are the most common styles. Many can multi task and be worn in the evening or for sightseeing.

Board shorts or cropped trousers are usually loose fitting with a drawstring waist for comfort and ease of dressing. A practical and simple option especially if running after children or participating in sports

6. Accessorise with a great pair of sunglasses, a bright pedicure, oodles of confidence and a smile.

I'm always thrilled with how my column looks once our graphic designer has worked his magic...

Continuing with the theme of bikinis, the blog post in which I styled a nautical bikini a week or so ago was one I debated about doing. I'm very happy to wear a bikini on a beach with my family, but putting it on a blog post is something else. After all, I'm 41 years old and have had two children. But, it's a gamble I'm glad I took because it has become one of my most read posts.

And just last week,  professional blogger and all round gorgeous mama, Vicki from Honest Mum, put one of her holiday snaps online. In it she was wearing a red bikini and the response she had was quite incredible, the image, to date, has reached over 40,000 people. It led her to write a blog post titled "Proud in my Bikini" It is a brilliant post and one well worth reading as she talks about body image and body confidence and I think it confirms what I suggest in point number 6 above...

...Smile, have confidence and be proud in your bikini!

Style Ideas: Brogues

I'm a huge fan of brogues and have several pairs which I wear with skinny jeans, cropped trousers and dresses.

They've been popular for several seasons now with no sign of their popularity diminishing. I think they could perhaps now be named as a fashion classic.

I first published this post in 2013 and it continues to be one of my most read posts, so I 've updated it with new images of looks I love, (some celebrity), and with photographs of how I wear my brogues (under which are links to the relevant blog posts for full details).

I'll keep on adding more to this post, so do check back if you love brogues as much as I do.

This was what I wore yesterday for a meeting with the owner of a Skipton based gift shop, Munchkins, about whom I'll be writing for the August issue of Aspire Magazine. I have similar meetings to attend per issue (each month), and it's something I really enjoy. It gives a good insight into the business and more interestingly, the local person or people behind it. Everyone is always very warm, welcoming and friendly and I try to conduct the interviews in an informal and chatty way, while remaining professional. I hope my clothes reflect this too. Smart casual.

My jacket is the navy version of a brown one I've had for two years. It's a jersey tweed which is ideal for this time of year as it is mid-weight, but also a brilliant alternative to actual woollen tweed if, like me, you don't like the itch!

In yesterday's blog post, I mentioned that I met with a lady about an upcoming feature in Aspire. Well the lady in question is called Sheri and she is absolutely lovely. Not only that, her gift shop Munchkins (in Skipton) is a treasure trove of home accessories, jewellery, scented candles and clothing! It was a nice way of mixing business with pleasure.

The clothes are all Italian and to maintain exclusivity in this small town, Sheri only orders one of each piece, though she could sell them several times over. It is this integrity that has made her a firm favourite with both locals and tourists alike.

I won't give any more away because I am writing a full feature about Sheri and her business for the August issue, but what I will share are photographs of a beautiful double layered top from her shop that I wore today.

It's a soft drapey jersey with a semi sheer silk layer at the back.
And a bow.
I love the bow.
It was the bow made that made me fall in love with this top.

Today was spent catching up on yesterday's chores which fell by the wayside because I was out all day watching my son play in a football tournament. It was great and the team got to the final only to be defeated during a penalty shoot-out taken after extra-time failed to conclude the match. We went out to a local pub for supper with some of his teammates and their families and were able to sit in the beer garden in the early evening sunshine for the first time this year.

Work was somewhat interrupted today by the presence of several workmen and a digger, here to dig up my drive, remove a wall and carry out remedial work necessary to abate seepage of water into my lower ground floor, a job which may take up to three weeks to complete.

This evening I visited another local business, this time in a neighbouring village to find out more about the couple behind it, again for the August issue of Aspire.

This tunic dress is from last year and is one which I love. It's a variation on my beloved breton stripes and I accessorise it in various different ways.
Today it was with rose gold courtesy of my heart pendant and my sandals

Yesterday was one of those days that gets more perfect, the more I think about it.
I had another day out with Adam, this time at Tatton Park in Cheshire. I hadn't been before but he had and was sure I'd love it.

I love stags, so to see these as we drove in was just amazing.

The kitchen garden is beautiful with rows and rows of chives.

The rhododendrons and azaleas were in full bloom...

...and the confetti from the fallen flowers was just beautiful.

It was so tranquil. We felt like we had entered another world.

After floating through the exquisite gardens, we went into the Mansion which was hosting a temporary installation, Guardian Angels, by Portuguese artist Cristina Rodrigues.

I wish I could go back...

I wore a beautiful new maxi dress from Onjenu and I absolutely loved floating and drifting through the beautiful gardens. It is very flattering and is as comfortable as it it stylish.

It is also nice and long. (I am just under 5'9" and wore it with wedge sandals).

Beauty: Irresistible Me Diamond Straightening Iron.

I don't think I'll be alone in saying that hair straighteners have revolutionised my hair regime. My hair is quite fine, but there is a lot of it. It is wavy, but not evenly so. Some parts, my fringe in particular, are curlier than others. It can be slightly flyaway and if I don't straighten it, slightly frizzy too.
I wash my hair every day and have done for for over twenty years. I dry it with the hairdryer and then almost without exception, straighten it with a flat iron. I've gone through several sets including those from the market leader to some own branded ones. Without doubt, some models are better than others and the performance varies hugely.

So I was very excited to try the Diamond Styling Iron by Irresistible Me to see how it compares.

I've been using it for a few days now and can honestly say it is absolutely brilliant.

The first thing I noticed is how lightweight and ergonomic it is. The tips remain cool and the appliance heats up quickly, taking just a matter of seconds. The temperature range is from 170-230C. I used them at 190C which for my hair was perfect.

Irresitible me red diamond straightening iron

Without doubt, this is the best straightening iron I have ever used. It glides across the hair and is incredibly easy to use. The ceramic plates are coated with crushed diamond particles which protect the hair and keep the natural oils and moisture in leaving the hair shiny and frizz-free. My hair looks sleek and smooth and with noticeably fewer flyaways than after using my previous set of straighteners.
The most significant factor though is how much quicker the whole process is with this iron.

These photographs were taken yesterday, another gorgeous day, another opportunity to wear shorts and sandals. I met up with my friend Claire in the morning at her beautiful working farm because she has asked me to help her choose new sofas and wants my advice on giving her living room a makeover. Neither of us are ever short of words and I ended up staying for lunch.
After that I called round to see my lovely friend Sally. We sat in the sunshine in her garden with lemon drizzle cake and a glass of Prosecco.

It was a perfect Friday.

My son and I spent a lovely afternoon with my brother and his baby daughter. His wife was working and it was nice for us to catch up.  He is an excellent cook so he made an early supper while we took the baby out for a long walk.
It started off overcast but quite warm this morning. I am trying to make the most of my wardrobe so decided to wear this broderie anglaise shift dress. I'm still favouring rose gold so accessorised with a heart pendant and sandals in that tone.

I love all things heart shaped and this slate cheeseboard is a new addition to the rectangular slate placemats that I already have. It's from Personalised Gift Solutions, a small family run business that has a wide selection of gifts for men, women, children and the home, which can, you've guessed it, be personalised.
I chose to have my blog name and my three favourite cheeses on mine. It would make a lovely wedding gift with the couple's names and the date added or a Father's Day gift perhaps.

I used mine as a platter for a simple lunch yesterday.

In yesterday's blog post, I showed you my lovely new cheeseboard, a slate heart from Personalised Gift Solutions, a small family run business based in Southampton. They create and sell personalised gifts, all of which are produced in the UK with free delivery on all orders.

My board is personalised with my blog name along with the names of three of my favourite cheeses. Manchego, which I adore with jamon when having Tapas, St.Agur,  a sweet, soft blue that I never tire of, and Lancashire, specifically crumbly, because it's made in my home county.

I try to present even the simplest of meals in a pretty way and this cheeseboard doubles up as the perfect platter.
Isn't this so much more aesthetically pleasing than a plate?

There is a wonderfully wide variety of products and the website is organised into sections with gift ideas for him, for her, for children and for couples, but actually, many fall into more than one category.

Here's what caught my eye.

As well as my slate heart cheeseboard, there are quite a few other gifts for fellow cheese lovers.

There are plenty of other choices for foodies too, including tea hampers, coffee sets and personalised wine and beer.

This Sparkling Rose Pamper Hamper holds enormous appeal...

These themed newspaper, sport and picture books are a lovely gift option for the sentimental among us. I would love to have got one of these for my grandfather for his 90th birthday earlier this year.

And for the romantics, (and I'm the biggest of all), there's a beautiful selection for that special person, for couples or for a wedding gift.

There's something for everyone including products featuring Disney, Tatty Teddy and Frozen characters. From Fathers Day to birthdays, christenings to Christmas and from toddlers to teachers, there is a personalised gift solution to be found. Do go and take a look and support this small British business because this is only a tiny fraction of what is available.

I went on a lunch date today with a dashing and distinguished gentleman who happens to be my dad.

We ate at Country Harvest, in Ingleton, North Yorkshire, close to both the Lancashire and Cumbria borders. Where the Lakes meets the Dales really. We were reviewing it for the magazine I write for and I can't think of a better way of combining business with pleasure. It was so lovely to spend time with my dad and have the opportunity to chat and enjoy his company.

The review will be in the August issue and I will put it on my blog once it is in print but I've included a few photographs from today.

My dress is one of my favourites from last year. I love the quirky flamingo print and the light cotton voile. It's just so swishy.

As well as the cafe-restaurant, Country Harvest has a gift shop and an amazing farm shop where the "Young Butcher of the Year" resides.

It was a warm day so we both ordered a cold lunch. This is my dad's Three Peaks Platter...

...and my Seafood Platter. Both were faultless. And yes, we both ate everything.

And how magnificent is my dad's lemon meringue pie ?

We ended with coffee...

...and a stroll outside to enjoy the beautiful setting.

It couldn't have been more perfect.

It's been a lovely, if slightly hectic, day or two- a combination of business, pleasure and the usual errands and chores.

My daughter has been on an exchange trip to Germany and returned last night with her German counterpart who is absolutely lovely and whose English is quite remarkable for a 14 year old. This evening, my parents came for an early supper along with my son's friend whose mother, my dear friend Barbara, is Italian. So what better way than to celebrate this mix of European cultures than with a curry! Two curries actually. One chicken and one vegetable (dopiaza-sweet potato, chickpea, cauliflower and broccoli) and I baked cupcakes too.

The dress is another of my favourites and it is at least three summers old. I adore the broderie anglaise and the scalloped hemline. I do love an excuse to wear a dress.

Yesterday was another brilliantly busy one, starting off with a morning spent with my friend and business partner Sally. We had a pop-up accessories shop at a local corporate head office. It was very successful and we sold out of several scarf designs and have very little jewellery left now. We were able to give a generous donation to Barnados, the chosen charity, always a good feeling.

I had to rush away early, so I could get to Bradford University for the afternoon.
My daughter is currently taking part in a Anglo-German engineering exchange programme. Along with the rest of the girls taking part, she was presenting a project in groups, in front of academics from several disciplines, as well as their own teachers and parents in one of the lecture theatres.

The standard of their designs and the competence of the presentations was incredible. It's hard to believe that these 14 year old English and German girls only started planning their project last Saturday in Hamburg and had just a day and a half to finish it this week back in Skipton on the return leg of the trip.

Language did not seem to be a barrier as each group presented their design complete with costings, materials, environmental impact in the most professional and mature way.

I couldn't have been prouder of them all and really do feel this has been an opportunity of a lifetime for my daughter. I know she'll take away happy memories, new skills and hopefully, a lifelong friendship with her German partner who we have loved having to stay in our home this week.

The day ended when we returned to my daughter's school for a celebratory evening meal.

I wore my printed silk tunic dress with silver low wedge sandals. It has served me well for a variety of occasions and I enjoy wearing it as much now as I did the first time.

I think dresses like this are incredibly versatile and have worn it three different ways in three different seasons (I am counting this latest way as summer, even though currently, it feels anything but).
Winter: with opaque tights and high heeled ankle boots
Spring: with nude tights and THE Boden Alice shoes for a party

Father's Day: My Dad

I've always had a lovely relationship with my dad but we've become closer over the last year or so. During this time, he has taught me to use a drill, put up shelves and change the oil and water in my car. I've cried on his shoulder and asked for more help than during the rest of my entire life put together. And he's always there.

He is the constant, much needed and utterly adored male role model in my children's lives.

We're similar in many ways. We share the same romantic nature and the ability to cry at everything and nothing. We have the same shaped legs and love dandelion and burdock.

He is warm, welcoming and gentle and thankfully, in this family, has the ability to laugh at himself. He loves my mum as much as the day he married her and he dotes on his five grandchildren.
And I know with utter certainty that I am his favourite daughter, a fact my two brothers cannot dispute.

He is a wonderful listener and a peacekeeper and is the best dad a girl could wish for.

Here we are 41 summers ago, on my first holiday when I was nine months old.

This was just two summers ago, taken at my cousin's wedding. We danced together to a live band. I'll never forget it.

He is always keen and willing to join in any kind of sporting activity. We went target shooting last summer when on holiday in Porto Santo.
I'm certain I beat him.

And this photograph was taken less than a week ago when we went out to lunch looking rather less hirsute than he did on the first photograph.

Happy Father's Day Dad.

I Love you,

Beauty: Amphora Aromatics Eye Gel

The last week or so has seemed busier than ever and the days have seemed to fly by. In common with most working mamas, I would be grateful for an extra hour or two at the end of each day to catch my breath and unwind a little. Well of course, that isn't going to happen, but no matter what, I take my make-up off and cleanse, tone and moisturise my face thoroughly, regardless of the hour or the amount of fizz consumed. Those few minutes of pampering make all the difference.

I added a new product to the regime this last week,  Seaweed & Aloe Refreshing Eye Gel from Amphora Aromatics
The seaweed and aloe are gentle enough to enable the gel to be used as an eye make-up remover. Natural extracts of eyebright and cornflower soothe, while cucumber adds to the hydrating and calming effect.

I wasn't familiar with the brand and as always, am interested in the background of the company. The founders, Christine and Peter Carroll travelled the world studying native traditional medicine systems and set up Amphora Aromatics on their return in the backroom of a small shop in Bristol in 1984. It is now one of the UK's largest suppliers of essential oils and aromatherapy products.

The Seaweed & Aloe Eye Gel is lightweight, easily absorbed and has a delicate scent. It feels cool and gentle and my eyes feel refreshed. It is one of those products that feels like an indulgence and I can't recommend it enough.

The eye gel was a gift from Amphora Aromatics. All views are 100% honest and all content is my own.

Well, it was almost like summer today. Or spring at least.  As much as love my skinny jeans, I'm always happy when it's mild enough to go bare-legged so opted for this lace tunic dress, sandals and a scarf which I had shed by mid morning.
Tunics like this are one of my favourite styles- I find the slight A-line very flattering and easy to wear and accessorise. The silhouette has more than a nod to the sixties, one of my favourite style decades.

I wore this lace shift dress with nude tights and navy accessories back in April for a dinner date.
And I wore another favourite tunic dress, a vibrant printed silk one, (The Boden Eliza) last week with these rose gold sandals.
