Regular readers know that my main day job entails writing copy for, and editing a local lifestyle magazine, Aspire. Every month, we review two restaurants, pubs or cafe and most months, I'm lucky enough undertake one of those. Over the summer, my children and I had the pleasure of visiting The George Inn. I highly recommend it, not least for the beautiful scenery that the route from Skipton takes in.
The George Inn is a traditional, historic country inn set beneath the rising fells of Langstrothdale in Upper Wharfedale. Centrally located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it's ideal for touring, cycling or walking being directly on the route of the Dales Way walk. The George offers accommodation in eight comfortable bedrooms, quality home-cooked food, cask beers from Black Sheep and other local breweries and an excellent selection of wines and malts.
Owners Jackie and Ed Yarrow fulfilled their ambition to provide food, drink and accommodation within the Yorkshire Dales, when they relocated from Leeds in 2013. Both were at the bar when and gave us the warmest of welcomes when we arrived to dine with them. They showed us to our table and I noticed that every other table was reserved. Ed told me that because they cater for both residents and visitors, this is often the case, so booking is advisable for evening dining.
The menu changes daily and everything is made fresh to order. To start, my daughter chose soup of the day which was carrot and vanilla, £5.95. Served with ciabatta, it was an unusual and delicious combination.
My son decided to try something new so ordered roasted bone marrow with caper and parsley salad, also served with ciabatta, £6.95, which he enjoyed. I find it hard to resist a seafood option so pan fried squid, prawns and chorizo held great appeal and did not disappoint. The combination of flavours was divine and all of the food was both beautifully presented and of generous portion.
There is an extensive wine list and I had a glass of Chenin Blanc which complimented my starter perfectly.
For their main course, both children ordered 10oz sirloin steak, £21.95, cooked to their liking and served with mushrooms, tomatoes, onion rings and served with proper chips. They both said their steak was the best they had ever eaten.
The George won both silver and bronze at the 2016 British Pie Awards so I had a chicken, smoked ham hock and leek pie served with chips and seasonal vegetables which included cabbage, carrots, mange-tout and baby peas £13.95. Packed with beautifully cooked meat and as fresh as a daisy, it is clear why these are prize-winning pies.
The children shared a dessert of blondie (white chocolate brownie), with chocolate ice-cream £6.95 and I had Baileys Crème Brûlée with an orange tuile. Utterly, utterly delicious.
We had a wonderful evening and enjoyed hearing about the history of the inn from Jackie and Ed and it was lovely to see them chat to every guest in the same way.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar and this is the couple's dog, George.
