My Next Sale Haul, Winter 2015.

$

It is quite rare these days for a retailer to wait until after Christmas before starting their winter sale. We tend to be offered discounts of varying degrees throughout he season which with the relatively recent adoption of Black Friday, means one rarely needs to pay the full retail price on anything.

Next however, has always offered excellent reductions in their twice-yearly sales (although even they have mid-season sales now), and with the exception of Harrods and London's fellow department stores, it is one of the few retailers to see queues of people way before opening time.

I didn't look online but visited a large Next store in Aintree, Liverpool on 27th December not wanting anything in particular. As with most sales, the middle or averages sizes were quite far and few between, and because the sale had commenced on Boxing Day, I knew the choice of clothing in my size would be limited. However, I did get two nighties and three pairs of shoes.

The first, a pair of black sparkly shoes, is something I feel has been missing from my shoe collection for some time. Among all my shoes, I didn't have a simple pair of black court shoes. Reduced from £23 to £10, they were an excellent purchase and I know I will get a lot of wear out of them.

My absolute favourite shoes in the world are, perhaps unsurprisingly, my Jimmy Choo Tahitis, below, that I wore most recently on Christmas Eve. They have an open toe and I have often wished for a similar pair in a closed toe style, so versatile are they.

These ones, reduced from £36 to £18 are along the same lines colour and texture wise. A champagne colour with sparkle, they will work with a lot of my dresses as well as with skinny jeans.

The third pair are more than a little reminiscent of Valentino Rockstuds, a design I have coveted for some time. These were a complete impulse purchase though and it was the colour combination that caught my eye. I am envisaging them with boyfriend jeans and a pretty top I have which is soft pink with a beaded collar. At £16 they were less than half price and I love them.

My final item is a grey fur cushion. At £6, reduced from £14, it is perfect for adding a little cosy texture.
Here it is along with one of the nightdresses (and the cute candle that is my Christmas present from my son).

My 2015- It's Been Quite Amazing.

$

As years go, 2015 has been one of great change for me both personally and professionally.
At times, it was challenging both practically and emotionally but it has, without question, been the most fulfilling and enriching 12 months of my life.

As you probably know by now, I work for Skipton based lifestyle magazine, Aspire. I started off just writing the fashion feature back in October 2014 after the director read my blog. At the very beginning of this year, she offered me the role of writer and editor, my first issue coming out in March. It was a dream come true because ever since starting this blog in May 2013, I'd hoped to turn my writing from a much loved hobby into a profession.

Distributed to 34K addresses in North and West Yorkshire and Lancashire, I cover quite a large area geographically and love nothing more than meeting clients about whom I'm writing. My role also includes restaurant and treatment reviews. This year I have had a natural facelift, reflexology, acupuncture without needles, sports massage, seated acupressure massage, relaxation hypnotherapy and reiki.

To say my job is varied would be an understatement.

To say I love my job would be an even bigger one.

My beautiful children continue to grow and mature and amaze me with their strength of character and resilience.
In July, we took took our first holiday as a threesome and stayed in Woolacombe, Devon. It rained and it blew a gale, but eventually, the sun came out and we managed to sit on the beach (albeit wrapped in beach towels). Tenacious and determined, we had the most wonderful week and my 12 year old son even swam in the freezing cold sea without a wetsuit. I wrote about our adventures and you can read about them in this blogpost.
I will remember that precious week as long as I live.

I was lucky enough to have another holiday, later in the year. Adam and I had our first holiday together and spent a blissful five days in Lisbon (while my children had a ball in Gran Canaria with my parents).
We ate, saw the sights, ate, shopped, ate and generally behaved like the happiest, most stereotypical tourists imaginable.
It was wonderful and for a laid-back city break, I cannot recommend a more beautiful location.

In Autumn, I was offered a further writing opportunity. For those that might not know, I'm an optometrist, (ophthalmic optician), by profession. I relinquished my career around 5 years ago to fit in with circumstances at that time. I loved being a stay at home mum, but always retained an interest in optometry and will forever, be proud of my degree and my professsional qualifications.

Also, as a result of reading my blog, my university friend, (who happens to be the clinical editor of Optometry Today, the optometric journal for members of the profession), offered me the opportunity to write a monthly page which is fashion led but with a clinical/ocular bias. This came out of the blue and I'm proud and thrilled to be involved with this brilliant publication. It rekindled my love with optometry and I feel the circle is now complete.
This was the second of the features and was in the December issue.

As the year drew to a close, I was invited to sell Danon jewellery on a website of my own. This came about after I was sent some of the jewellery to review. My passion for the brand was immediate and over the months, I found it very easy to write about and promote.
The lovely, lovely lady who sent the jewellery put my name forward to the owner and I met with her but a month ago. Within two weeks, I had managed, with so many calls to IT support that the guy on the other end recognised my voice and we ended up on first name terms, plus some very late nights and a *touch* of stress, to launch Lizzy O.

I designed the dragonfly logo because I love dragonflies and because a dragonfly necklace was the very first piece of Danon jewellery I owned.

I am very excited about this brand. It is beautiful quality and is a little different. It is a brand in which I truly believe and I love every single piece on my website.

With the exception of my holiday to Woolacombe, everything I have written about today, including meeting Adam, has been as a direct result of my blog.
This little blog, about which I'm passionate and which has opened more doors than I could ever have imagined.

So, I would say to anyone, follow your dreams.
Yes, it's hard.
People may think you're bonkers(!), but persevere.
Don't let anyone rain on your parade. Ever.
And be honest. Always.

If you have passion and are prepared to work hard and make the most of every opportunity, you CAN achieve your goals and your dreams.

As always, it's been a team effort. My wonderful parents, my two brothers and their families. My friends, near and far. All continue to support me in every way. Adam is patient, kind, romantic, a great present buyer (yippee) and a very patient photographer. And my gorgeous children. My daughter in particular must take credit for the vast majority of my outfit photos and my son who steps in when needed. They are my world.

I am truly blessed and so loved and we are healthy and safe.

I have everything I have ever wanted. What more could anyone wish for?

Thank you, thank you, thank you for reading my blog and for all of the lovely comments and emails. It really does mean so much.

Happy New Year!

I hope you had a lovely evening. Ours was spent quietly at home with a few glasses of fizz, some nice food and a little bit of tv. Perfect after what has been a very hectic few weeks.

Today has been equally leisurely for what has been a very cold but dry day. A few errands this morning followed by a very late pub lunch.

I have worn this knitted dress on several occasions but failed to get any good outdoor blog photos because the weather has been so bad so I'm very pleased to have finally succeeded. It's currently reduced from £89 to £26.50 and is a very cosy alternative to jeans.

Excuse the goosebumps but at least you can see the beautiful Swarowski set bee on both my Danon necklace and T-bar bracelet. I adore all of the Danon jewellery on my website.

My tights are equally cosy and are the warmest I have ever worn. They look like a pair of over-the-knee socks worn over lighter grey opaque tights. They are very unusual and I highly recommend them.

I'll be back tomorrow with some beautiful photos of a glorious walk we went on yesterday around Fewston Reservoir near Harrogate. Nice to see some clear blue sky and to blow the post-Christmas cobwebs away.

A New Year's Eve Walk: Fewston Reservoir, Harrogate.

This comes slightly out of sync because I had so many beautiful photos to look through after Adam and I went for a lovely walk on New Year's Eve, that I had trouble deciding which to include.

Fewston Reservoir lies just off the A59, near Blubberhouses in Harrogate, just a short drive from my home in Skipton. Parking is free and is apparent and very easily accessible from the main road.

The route around the reservoir is 3.7 miles and it took us 2 hours including a lot of stopping for photographs. It would have perhaps taken an hour and a half without the stops. The paths are very well maintained and it is flat almost everywhere and suitable for pushchairs and bicycles. We saw a lot of joggers, dog walkers and walkers of all ages.

It was very cold with a clear blue sky for the majority of the walk. It clouded over towards the end but for the most part was the picture perfect winter's day.

This is the reservoir spillway and dam at the far end from where we started the walk.

As the sun began to fade, I saw this beautiful bare tree and to me, it felt symbolic of the imminent new year.

The structure is there and although we know it will change throughout the seasons, we don't exactly know how and when, because other factors are involved. I though it was beautiful even without its leafy adornments.

Much like life really.
If the structure is there, and love and honesty are at the root of everything, then it too is beautiful and perfect and though we may enjoy other things-and let's be honest, who doesn't- they are as transient as the leaves.

My New Year Resolutions (Plus Wearing Brogues With A Dress)

$

For many, today is the first working day proper after the Christmas holiday, myself included. I must admit though, it's been difficult to refrain from actioning a few (Aspire) work emails that arrived last week. I did write a few blog posts and continued working on my jewellery businesses but to a much lesser extent and on the whole, it was a good break.

Which leads me to my New Year's Resolutions.

My work, (writing for Aspire and Optometry Today and online businesses Lizzy O and What Lizzy Loves Botique) plus my blog and its associated social media are incredibly fulfilling and I love each one as much as the next. However, I'm self-employed and at times, in fact, most days, I find it hard to switch off and often work until late in the evening.
This year, I plan to finish work earlier to enable me to read more in the evenings before going to sleep.

Another hobby of mine is keeping fit and is one which fell by the wayside around two years ago. I used to do spinning classes, use the gym and swim several times per week and I've missed it. So I have rejoined and went to the gym and had an induction this morning. I aim to go three times per week to do a variety of exercise, which I think, will in turn, both energise me and enable me to relax more and sleep better. I have booked my very first yoga class for next Monday morning too which I'm really looking forward to. I'm fearful I won't actually be able to walk in the morning, but gosh it felt good!

My final and most important resolution is to spend more quality time with my children. That old chestnut. We're together during most of their spare time but we don't always do very much, mainly because it is difficult pleasing a 14-year-old girly girl and a 12-year-old sports mad boy (suggestions very very welcome). We all love eating out and had a great time bowling along with Adam last week, but even trying to find a film to appeal to them both is difficult! I'm on a mission...

My daughter and I made a good start on this latter resolution yesterday. My son is away skiing with school, so we spent the day at the Trafford Centre, shopping and lunching. Although she failed to spend a single one of her Christmas vouchers and I bought little more than some "calming" tea from Marks and Spencer, we loved every moment and we spent the evening relaxing, chatting and eating tortilla chips. Must keep up the gym...

I have worn this dress on may occasions finding it very versatile and I wore it with nude tights and flat Mary Janeswhen in Lisbon and have also worn it with black opaque tights and heeled ankle boots. Yesterday, I went for tan brogues which are very comfortable enabling my feet to shop in complete comfort. they are the Hamble Oak from Clarks and knowing my love of brogues, Adam surprised me with a pinky peach pair for Christmas which I absolutely can't wait to wear.
My bag is a sneaky sales purchase from Mint Velvet and it's just what I'd been looking for. Black with some texture and an across the body style. Perfect!

Have you made any New Year's resolutions? I'd love to hear from you in the comments.

Beauty: Arbonne Skincare's Five Step Programme.

$

I'm always keen to try new skincare ranges so when offered the opportunity to sample RE9, Arbonne's anti-ageing skincare line, I was both interested and keen.
The skincare range is developed by using organic botanical products known for their specific anti-ageing properties.
The formulations are free from talc, trans fats, mineral oil, parabens and other "nasties" and are vegetarian and vegan friendly with no animal testing.

The RE9 range is formulated for its anti-ageing properties and is a five step programme.

Step 1: Smoothing Facial Cleanser
This is applied to damp skin twice daily and rinsed with warm water. My skin felt very comfortable without any of the dryness sometimes associated with wash-off cleansers.

Step 2: Regenerating Toner
PH balanced and full of anti-oxidants, this is a refreshing second step.

Step 3: Intesive Renewal Serum
The ingredients are chosen for their collagen supporting properties. I found it absorbed into my skin very easily which I liked. I have tried serums previously that felt too strong for my skin. This one didn't and it didn't feel sticky or excessively oily either.

Step 4: Corrective Eye Creme
To help diminish the look of fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. This did feel slightly sticky upon application but sunk in quickly with no discernible residue.

Step 5: Restorative Day Creme SPF20 or Extra Moisture Restorative Day Creme SPF20 or Night Repair Creme.
Both day creams are thicker and felt richer than my usual daily moisturiser but again seemed to melt into the skin and had an almost matt finish meaning I could apply foundation immediately. I particuarly like the fact that both contain SPF20.
The Night Repair Creme is, as one would expect, the richest of the three moisturusers and contains a blend of botanicals and collagen supporting ingredients.
The first four steps don't have a significant scent or fragrance but all three of the Step 5 moisturisers have a very delicate orange-y scent which is lovely.

Each sample was 3ml and lasted between two days (the toner) and five (the serum and eye creams), showing that a little goes a long way.

It would have been unrealistic to have seen any significant changes in the appearance of my skin texture or tone within such a short time, but I can say for sure that it felt softer to the touch.
Every product was nice to use and it's reassuring to know that the ingredients are all organic and natural.

It's a yes from me...!

#LovingMyNatural Beauty: A Hairfinity Campaign and Giveaway

It's important to feel proud and celebrate the parts of your body that make you feel beautiful. Too often we focus on the negatives.

I was very flattered to be invited to take part in Hairfinity's #LovingMyNaturalBeauty campaign in which along with some other women, I was asked to give a little quote about what I think is my best natural feature.

I chose my hair because as a natural redhead, I was subject to a little teasing at school and longed for dark, glossy curls like Catherine Zeta Jones (who at that time was starring in The Darling Buds of May and was the nation's sweetheart ).

Fast forward fifteen years to ante-natal classes, when sitting alongside other expectant mothers, I lost count of the number of times I heard "I don't care what this baby looks like so long as it's not ginger." They would soon realise their faux pas and hurriedly say "But of course, yours isn't really ginger. It's strawberry blonde."

It was probably only when I reached my mid 30s, and I'm now 42, that I grew to love my red hair. It's warm and vibrant and a little different. It's glossy, strong and, best of all, unlike dark hair, doesn't show greys (quite as much). And although last summer I had a few highlights put in around the front, I am very much still natural redhead.

Here are the other ladies in the campaign, loving their natural beauty.

Outfit: Grey Lace Day Dress with Purple Brogues

My son has been away on a school trip all week so on Friday evening, my daughter and I went out for pizza. We've enjoyed spending a little quiet time alone throughout the week, but we both missed the boy like crazy. He is lively, chatty and full of energy and the house just wasn't the same without him.
He arrived home full of excitement, having had the best time and I feel complete again.

I wore a new dress which was an impulse buy from Fat Face when I popped in last week. I couldn't see it online, but the sale continues so it's worth popping into a store if you like it.

It is my favourite type of dress. The sort that can be dressed up or down, worn worn with or without tights and with boots, brogues, and fingers crossed, with sandals should the weather choose to behave.

I love the charcoal grey and the crocheted lace details, particularly the sleeves, are just so pretty that I couldn't resist.

Five Eye Make-Up Tips for Spectacle Wearers

$

I thought it might be useful to share the tips from my latest column in the current issue of Optometry Today in which I give make-up tips for spectacle wearers.
(Optometry Today is the professional journal for members of the optics profession and takes me back to my professional roots as an optometrist. I write a monthly feature that is fashion led but with a focus on eyewear and optics).

Make up tips for spectacle wearers

The trend for statement eyewear is set to stay and the days of hiding behind spectacles are long gone. Bold styles draw attention to the wearer’s face, so makeup must be flawless.

Good lighting and a magnifying mirror are key for those who find it difficult to see their eyes without their glasses.

1.Banish Shadows
Frames and lenses can cast shadows underneath the eyes so apply concealer to the inner corners of the eyes and any place else the glasses cast a shadow. A lightweight liquid concealer is less likely to crease or look cakey. As with all make-up, apply with a light hand. It is easier to add more than to remove it and start again. Choose a shade a little lighter than the foundation and if necessary, use a peachy pink corrector to counter the greenish tone of under eye shadows.

2. Lengthen Lashes
Curl the top lashes with an eyelash curler to widen the eyes and to keep the eyelashes from touching the lenses. Thickening mascaras contain fibres that can deposit on the back surface of the lenses, so are best avoided. Consider a waterproof or long-lasting formula with a smaller brush to reduce clumping.

3. Draw a Line
Adjust eyeliner thickness to suit the frames. A thicker frame needs a thicker line to the upper lashline to make the eyes stand out. A finer frame needs a finer line. Light-coloured eye shadow with a luminescent finish will make the eyes look larger, while a darker matt finish will have the opposite effect. This should be considered alongside the magnifying or minifying effect of a significant prescription.

Make up tips for spectacle wearers

4. Define the Brows
Thanks to uber-model Cara Delevingne, dark, thick eyebrows are de rigeur. This look works well with a dark, thick frame but can overpower a delicate style. Neat, well-defined and in proportion with the frame is the aim of this eyebrow game.

Make up tips for spectacle wearers

5. Make a Face
Once the eye makeup is complete, put the spectacles on and look at the face as a whole. Ensure the rest of the maquillage balances the eyes. Define the cheekbones with blusher or bronzer and choose lip colour carefully. The notion of having only a strong eye or a strong lip is outdated. Go as bold as you dare and enjoy the attention.

Book Review: Farfetch Curates Art (Where Art and Fashion Meet).

$

When I was offered the opportunity to review a book about art, I hesitated because art is something about which I know nothing I felt it wouldn't be in keeping with me or my blog.
I looked into it a little further though and liked the concept of the company behind the book. A little research and realised that actually, (and perhaps now, rather obviously), there is a very strong link between art and fashion.

The book is titled Farfetch Curates: Art and is the third book in a series, each having a fashion-focused viewpoint.

Farfetch is a revolutionary way of buying fashion and is a website that brings together more than 300 of the world's best independent designer boutiques from fashion capitals of the world. The bricks and mortar partner boutiques occupy a million square feet of retail space across 30 countries. They were carefully selected for their unique approach , forward-thinking attitude and diversity and include Browns in  London and Fivestory in New York. Farfetch offers these boutiques the opportunity to compete with the major players in online retail and for fashion-lovers, offers the chance to indulge in a little worldwide shopping.

As well fashion, the website sells accessories, homeware, stationery and children's toys to name but a few categories. I could easily lose myself for a few hours of browsing.

The book takes a look at the greatest aspects of art from 2015 with commentary from cutting edge curators as well as Farfetch boutique owners. It looks at the close relationship between fashion and art. Many artists collaborate with designers and use fashion as a medium to share their images. many fashion designers are inspired by art with many travelling  to faraway places to museums and to visit collections. Although fashion and art are distinct disciplines, the separation line between them is blurred,  a fact which not everyone in the art world approves of.

This book demonstrates that they can be showcased together while maintaining their individual integrity and specificity.
It is, as one would expect, full of beautiful photographs which catch the eye and draw the reader in. As a "non-arty" person, the accompanying descriptions made for quite fascinating reading and certainly helped to interpret the images and the thinking behind them.

A visual feast which I shall continue to dip in and out of.

It is well worth taking a look at the Farfetch website for style inspiration (or indulgence if blessed with a healthy budget)

The Clarks Winter Sale- Boots, Brogues and More.

One of my go-to places for footwear, particularly brogues and boots is Clarks and they are currently in the final few days of the winter sale and there are some excellent reductions.

My lovely man surprised me at Christmas with the Hamble Oak brogues in peach combi, taking my total to three pairs.
I have them in tan leather and burgundy leather (from a few years ago) and I wear them over and over.
The peachy pink ones are divine and I'm so looking forward to wearing them in spring. They're current season so aren't in the sale, but two other colourways are reduced by at least a half.

I've been looking online for some warm, practical waterproof boots for when I watch my son play football. I often wear wellies but find that they're just not warm enough.

I was quite excited to see these, available in grey and black and significantly reduced. After much debate I ordered the black pair to be delivered into store.

I wish I had opted for the grey which has a duck-egg blue trim because the black ones have a purple trim which, though perfectly obvious now, I hadn't noticed when placing the order. They ticked the warm, comfortable and practical boxes but the colour combo just wasn't for me.
I'm undecided whether or not to re-order in the grey.

All was not lost though because when collecting my order, I spotted these casual leather boots (high-tops? trainers?) I couldn't resist trying them and once they were on, given that it was sleeting outside, I didn't want to take them off, so cosy were they.
They aren't suitable for standing on a freezing cold muddy sideline, but they will be perfect worn with jeans for casual days and walks once the weather is drier.

There are boots a plenty in the sale, in all styles and colours but it was these leopard print boots that I could not and did not resist so ordered these into store too.
They are perfect and I plan to wear them tomorrow for my dad's birthday lunch.

Outfit: LBD and Leopard Print Boots (For a Birthday Lunch)

Yesterday my children, parents and I celebrated my dad's 65th birthday with a lunch at my home. I'm always glad that he has a birthday in January as it gives us something to look forward to post-Christmas.
I'll never tire of writing just how brilliant he and my mum have been, especially over the last year or so. Their unconditional love and support continues and I'm fortunate to have young fit parents who are so willing to help me out. Not only that, I love their company and there is always lots of laughter. We have a close, open relationship and their advice is invaluable.

I wanted to wear my new Clarks leopard print boots so chose a simple little black dress that has been a favourite for about a year. It needed little more than a statement necklace and it allowed the boots to speak for themselves. It's worth saying that they fit true to size and are incredibly comfortable.

It was the most perfect winter's day. Cold and clear (with little sign of the snow that was to fall later).

Copper, bronze and rose gold accessories have been popular for a few seasons now and I got this ice-bucket just before Christmas...

...And I chose bronze coloured birthday candles and decorations to adorn the chocolate cake I'd baked.

As part of my role as writer and editor for Aspire Magazine, I have the very lovely task of reviewing restaurants from time to time and my most recent is in the current (February) issue.

Just before Christmas, I went to one of my favourite restaurants, just a few miles from the centre of Skipton. It is used for weddings, conferences, has a brand new spa and offers clay pigeon shooting, falconry and other country pursuits. It is widely acknowledged to be one of the very best in the area.

If you're looking for somewhere to dine or stay which is but a stone's throw from the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park, this comes with my full recommendation for every aspect.

The Huntsman’s Lodge is situated in The Coniston Hotel which sits in 1400 acres of beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside in Coniston Cold just a ten minute drive from the centre of Skipton. A large roaring open fire, is a stunning visual centerpiece and is the focal point of the large, airy and exquisitely decorated restaurant. A full glass wall leads to a large terrace which overlooks the large lake.

My friend Sally and I dined in the Huntsman’s Lodge on a Wednesday evening just before Christmas. We received a lovely warm welcome and were seated close to the fire at our request. We were in a celebratory mood so ordered a glass of Prosecco each to start our evening while we perused the menu which is extensive and varied.

Categories include Field Food, which is a selection of small dishes and nibbles alongside starters and salads, main courses and vegetarian specialities with daily specials of soup, casserole and catch of the day.

We both opted for a seafood starter. Sally had prawn and crayfish risotto, which after trying a forkful was able to agree completely when she described it as creamy and full of flavor with a light, almost melt in mouth texture.

I had baked Queenie scallops with garlic and gruyere cheese, artistically presented in a scallop shell. It was a delicious combination of flavours and a dish I would not hesitate in ordering again.

I chose the casserole of the day for my main course which was grouse. Served in a lidded dish and accompanied by chips and seasonal vegetables, it was tasty and warming and the game was very tender.

One of Sally’s favourite dishes is liver so she ordered pan seared calves liver, served in a red wine jus with grain mustard and bacon mash. She said it was faultless and we both commented that it would be hard to find food to better our main courses.

We shared a bottle of Chilean Rio Rica Sauvignon Blanc, which was fresh and zesty and soon finished.

Neither Sally nor I are known for having a small appetite, so it was without question or hesitation that we ordered dessert. Sally’s traditional sherry trifle and my cappuccino crème brulee with Baileys ice cream and a shortbread biscuit were the perfect finish to a perfect meal.

The service, ambience and quality of the food were unbeatable and we enjoyed every moment at this beautiful restaurant.

Beauty: Amphora Aromatics Frankincense and Rose Clay Face Mask

I have reviewed several beauty products from Amphora Aromatics and the latest is the Frankincense and Rose Clay Face Mask.

A deep cleansing and nourishing face mask, it smells absolutely divine, the rose and frankincense equally apparent. I find frankincense induces relaxation which is exactly what one requires when having a mini pamper at home. To lie for 10 minutes knowing this lovely product is doing its thing is bliss.
As well as soothing the soul, the frankincense helps to rejuvenate and tone the skin while the rose oil
nourishes, hydrates and moisturises.

This worked smoothed my T-zone leaving it discernibly clearer looking and it smoothed my cheeks and forehead.

Another lovely product and priced at just £7.98 for 100ml, is excellent value too.

Highly recommended.

Outfit: Snake Print Leggings With Ankle Boots and a Velvet Jacket

I had a lovely evening last night combining business with pleasure. My friend Sally was my dinner date for a restaurant review I did for Aspire Magazine.
We ate at the Tennants Arms in Kilnsey, about 12 miles out of Skipton and it was excellent. The review will appear in the March issue and as always, I will share my review here once it is out in print.

I wanted to deviate from my usual choice of a dress for such occasions so wore these amazing reptile print leggings with high- heeled ankle boots and a velvet jacket.

I have plans to style them in a few different ways so will do my best to get some photographs taken in natural daylight. The wet weather precluded this yesterday.

The leggings are from the Foundation Range at Hope Fashion. designed with both comfort and style in mind. The collection comprises four shapes, a long sleeve scoop top (which I have in black and will be wearing soon), a vest, a body and leggings.

They are made from a super-soft, super-stretchy and super-comfy Italian fabric for which I was grateful given the hearty three course meal I consumed.

They maintained their shape and looked unworn even when I took them off (I think this is the first pair of leggings that hasn't gone even a little baggy at the knees, particularly after sitting for several hours).

The vibrant print calls for only the simplest of accessories so the only jewellery I wore was this bronze and black statement necklace.

And this Mint Velvet black leather and ponkskin clutch.

About Hope Fashion

-Hope Fashion is the brainchild of Nayna Mackintosh, herself a 40 plus woman.
-The models reflect this age group and the sizing is inspired.
-The collection has been designed using the principles of Divine Proportion (found in science, nature and the arts and represents the balance of working in thirds). In reality, following this principle when dressing can elongate the body making the silhouette look taller and slimmer. This is The Hope Code.

Outfit: The Maxi Sweat Dress by Monks on Vacation

Yesterday, Saturday, was the most perfect winter's day, in fact, the unseasonably warm temperature made it feel more like early spring.

With my children otherwise occupied, Adam and I went out for lunch to one of our favourite restaurants, Rhubarb, at Herriots in Skipton, which is a short walk from my home along the canal towpath.

I wore a new dress by the brilliantly named Monks On Vacation

This is a new British brand headed up by Anneli Nowroz who wanted to create garments to suit a busy lifestyle and that are comfortable, stylish and easy to wear. The fabrics have all been knitted here in the UK and the manufacturing takes place in London.

What is lovely too is that the model on the website is Anneli's Pilates teacher and while she is as beautiful as any professional model, she is a "real" woman which makes the brand easier for the customer- you and I- to identify with.

The capsule collection comprises jersey jackets and tops with a striped tee which is a lovely alternative to a traditional breton, plus maxi skirts and pants all in neutral colours enabling much mixing and matching.

The Maxi Sweat is made from a grey melange jersey and has oversized ribbing detail on the cuffs and hem, with pockets and a sumptuous roll neck. It's beautifully made and held its shape perfectly.
It's versatile too. Perfectly practical for our stroll along the canal, (though I did have to shorten my stride very slightly to accommodate the narrower-than-I'm-used-to hemline), and smart enough for lunch.

It might possibly be the comfiest, snuggliest most cocoon-like dress I have ever worn and I absolutely love it.

The extra long sleeves really add to the cosiness of the dress and are a very stylish detail.
(I'm still in love with my double star ring too).

The canal was very tranquil and still yesterday, so it was a very relaxing stroll.

My ham hock terrine, winter salad of butternut squash with cous-cous and winter berries crème brûlée were accommodated rather nicely by this most flattering of styles.

It is THE perfect weekend dress.

Lisbon: The City That Stole My Heart #ileftmyheartin

During my late twenties and thirties I visited some of the most iconic cities in the world. Sydney, New York, Singapore, Barcelona, Florence and Rome as well as all of our UK capital cities. I have wonderful memories of them all, albums full of photographs, and keepsake boxes full of souvenirs, plane tickets and other paraphernalia.

Each city was as enticing, as exciting and as memorable as the next, and I would return to every single one, but it was the city of Lisbon that stole my heart when I visited in October.

What Lizzy Loves, steps in Baixa, Lisbon
Beautiful stone steps in Baixa, Lisbon

It was my first holiday with Adam and we stayed in a small, independent hotel in Areerio, a ten minute taxi ride from Lisbon airport.

Baixa, the heart of the city is known also as downtown Lisbon and this was just a few Metro stops away from our hotel .

Rua Augusta is Lisbon's main pedestrian street which, in common with much of the rest of the city, has the most beautiful mosaic pavements.
The triumphal arch is the unmissable landmark at the end of Rua Augusta which leads through to Comercio Square and the River Tagus and was stunning rain and shine, night and day.

It reminded me of London's Covent Garden and Barcelona's Las Ramblas. It is lively and cosmopolitan with numerous outdoor cafes, a wide variety of shops and the occasional street performer.

Rua Augusta, Lisbon

We went up to the top of the arch, via an elevator followed by two very narrow stone spiral staircases, on what was rather a grey day.

It afforded the most stunning views in every direction. The bird's eye view of the mosaic pavements and the hustle bustle of Rua Augusta to the north was spectacular.

As was the view to the south of Comercio Square and the River Tagus.

Back on Rua Augusta, we discovered a wonderful street cafe, Sao Nicolau. We breakfasted, lunched and dined there several times and enjoyed Vinho Verde and bread during one of our pit stops. The staff were excellent- attentive yet unobtrusive and the food was simple, unpretentious, very fresh and delicious. We relished their simple dish of prawns in garlic butter.

Lisbon is served by trams both as a means of public transport and as a tour vehicle.

We went on a Hills Tour around the city's narrow streets. There was commentary in several languages and it was fascinating to find out more about the history and to see what Lisbon looked like beyond Baixa.

This tour started and ended at Praca do Comercio.

The views afforded through the tram window were wonderful and quite unusual.

Praco Dom Pedro IV, (also known as Rossio Square), is the main central square in Baixa.
At the north side of the square is the Teatro Nacional. The mosaic pavement is a sight to behold. Rossio train station is very close by.

What Lizzy Loves, Rossio square, Lisbon

It was from Rossio station that we travelled to Sintra, a journey that took 45 minutes.
Sintra is a picturesque town set amidst the pine covered hills of the Serra de Sintra, west of Lisbon. Home to a lot of monuments and historic buildings, because the slightly cooler climate attracted Portugal's elite and noble, who constructed palaces, extravagant residences and highly decorative gardens.

There are several hop-on, hop-off bus services which afford a circular route around the town with the option to visit other landmarks and attractions. We took one from the cente of Sintra, up through the narrow winding streets to perhaps the most recognisable landmark, The Palacio Nacional de Pena (Feather Palace). The flamboyant complex was commissioned by King Ferdinand II.

Sintra

Each section of the exterior is individually styled with vivid colours, fine carvings and beautiful tiles and mosaics.

Sintra

Sintra

Access to the palace is unlimited and in parts it is quite precarious. Health and safety there is, (rather refreshingly), not an issue and the narrow walls, arches and turrets made for great viewing places.

Sintra

So, why did I fall in Love with Lisbon?

I loved its unexpected quaintness. The architecture is beautiful with no skyscrapers or overtly modern constructions. Many buildings are exquisitely tiled or are painted in mouthwatering sorbet shades.

Lisbon

Tiled houses in Lisbon

Lisbon

It's chic but shabby chic, and elegant, but casually so and the mosaic pavements are works of art.

The local people are warm and welcoming and they offered the friendliest of service.

It is beautiful and unspoiled. Modest and unassuming, much like the man with whom I shared this wonderful trip. Our stay was relaxing yet invigorating and from it we have taken the fondest memories.

I left my heart in Lisbon.

And one day, I'll go back.

Well-being: Seated Acupressure Massage

Regular readers will know that my day job entails writing for and editing Aspire Magazine, a local publication that is delivered to Skipton and the surrounding areas.

Each month we feature a series of health columns and sometimes I am lucky enough to try a treatment which I then write about.

Last December, I had an acupressure massage at Craven Clinic in Skipton, the review of which appears in the latest, (February), issue

Seated Acupressure Massage, also known as On Site Massage, (OSM) is a twenty minute treatment given through the clothes, often at the workplace to a client who is seated. It was introduced in the USA at Apple and was later brought to the UK and a folding, ergonomic, portable chair was specially designed for optimum comfort.

Based on a traditional form of Japanese massage, the sequence works to improve the flow of energy throughout the body and acts on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Over 60 acupressure points are included, as well as specific trigger points. It is a revitalising treatment which aims to promote a sense of wellbeing, relax tense muscles and increase blood circulation.

My treatment was carried out by Elizabeth Crosland who asked me about my health and well-being before starting the treatment. I went the day before the print deadline for the January issue, so my shoulders and lower back attested to the many hours spent on the laptop that week.

The chair, though unusual, was incredibly comfortable and my body felt totally supported. The client sits facing the back of the chair with the knees and the head on comfortable rests.

(I took these photos with my phone, so the quality isn't perfect, but it gives a good enough idea).

The massage varied in pressure and tempo and was absolutely blissful. Liz eased my tense shoulders and massaged the ache away from my lower back- complaints typical of those who work at a desk. I honestly felt so comfortable that I could have stayed all afternoon. Liz was friendly, warm and professional and I felt completely at ease and in fact we chatted for quite a while after my treatment had finished.

It was relaxing and soothing yet invigorating and I returned home to work feeling revitalised, energised and a lot more relaxed.

It is done without oils or lotions and through the clothes so it is absolutely ideal to be taken to the workplace as well as hospitals, schools, exhibitions, public events, sport events, charity events.

If you are looking for a quick, beneficial boost which soothes, uplifts and increases productivity, I cannot think of a better option than this.

My Week and What I Bought in the Boden Winter Clearance Sale

Gosh it's been a busy few weeks and I can hardly believe it's the last weekend in January. My weeks seem to fly by in a flurry of deadlines and meetings and today was the copy deadline for Aspire magazine, always a frenetic day.

The stormy miserable weather makes spring feel like a very long way off but because like all magazines, we work (at least) two months in advance, the fashion column I have just submitted for the March issue is about the upcoming trends for spring and summer.

Some are the predictable summer style classics- nautical, white, metallics and animal print, whereas others come as a surprise. Who would have thought that one of the hottest colours of the season in both fashion and lingerie is to be orange?
Of course somebody somewhere months and months back did just that. Decided that the future's going to be bright; but it's only when it filters down onto the high street that it really becomes a discernible trend.

Now I like orange but, as a fair-skinned redhead, it doesn't really return the favour, but I do have a fabulous pair of orange quilted Mulberry shoes from several years ago so I will embrace this particuar trend with a gentle caress rather than a full blown squeeze.  I find that adding a few well chosen accessories is the ideal way to dip a toe into a new trend especially if it might only be a one season wonder.

Oftentimes trends traverse fashion, jewellery and interiors and at this moment in time, I can't get enough of  metals of the moment, copper and rose gold. I'm on the lookout for a bag in those tones too.
I have added a copper table lamp and candle holders to the kitchen dining area at home and already, it looks more contemporary, and has perked it up a little.

The good news is, these warm metallic shades are here to stay.

Which brings me to these rather fabulous shoes.

I spotted them at the start of last season in Boden but at that time couldn't justify purchasing them. They have been reduced in the sale though and because I think they will go with a lot of things from summer dresses to skinny or boyfriend jeans, I ordered them and am pleased to report they are even more glittery and gorgeous in real life. (I have a photograph I took of them myself which I will put on Instagram which, in my opinion, shows off just how exquisite they are).

The Bow Heel in bronze glitter is, at the time of writing, reduced from £139 to £41.70.
(They fit true to size- mine are a 41 which is my usual Boden size).

They also come in black suede (suede being another trend for the new season). Black of course never goes out of fashion which is how I justified buying these too. They aren't reduced by quite as much as the copper but are still less an half of the original price at £55.50 from £139.

The Strappy T Bar comes in a variety of colours with many sizes still being available. The rose gold is absolutely beautiful and I think is a lovely warm neutral. I ordered them because I think they are the type of shoe that will work hard for the wardrobe throughout the seasons. They were only £20.70 from £69 but sadly when I tried them, they rubbed my little toe. It is very rare that I return any shoes for not being comfortable so I was a little disappointed. Do have a look though at the other colours. This style of shoe is fast becoming a classic and I can see these looking just as current in a year from now.

The final pair of shoes that I ordered from the Boden winter sale is from the Johnnie B teen range. These pull-on trainers in silver were £7.80, reduced from £26. I got a floral pair of these last summer also from Johnnie B and love them. I wore them throughout last summer and In fact wore them just last week with a cosy maxi sweater dress.
They are incredibly comfortable and are great for popping on with jeans, shorts and casual dresses. I would advise sizing down in this style. In last year's pair and in these I only needed a 40 instead of my usual 41 in the ladies styles.

I'm going to be adding some gorgeous new Danon stock to Lizzy O this weekend in readiness for Valentine's Day plus I'm going to write a post about Danon the brand because I don't feel I have introduced it properly (time got the better of me when I launched it just before Christmas).

In the meantime, do take a look at my accessories boutique for affordable wrap bracelets, pendants and scarves..

and at the Danon jewellery site Lizzy O for beautifully handcrafted jewellery.

Both of my websites offer free UK delivery and everything comes beautifully presented (but sent in a plain postage bag for secret shoppers!)

I am probably going to consolidate my two online businesses too so that all of the accessories I sell are available in just one place but that might take a little time!

Have a lovely weekend,

Outfit: Animal Print Swing Dress, Styled for Winter

We spent a lovely afternoon yesterday, (Saturday), visiting my brother and sister-in-law in their new home and it was so good to see the sun put in an appearane, albeit between hail and snow showers.

My multi animal print dress is a lightweight dress, in a simple shape that lets the print speak for itself.  A long-sleeved top, opaque tights, a velvet jacket and boots made it very wearable for a winters day indoors and I'm very much looking forward to styling it for my summer holiday without the layers and with bare legs and sandals.
It's from Manchester based website Luxemme which stocks a wide range of  women's fashion

The top is a longline style, which fits neatly, adding minimal bulk and maximum comfort and warmth.
It's from the Hope Fashion Foundation Range, the same range as the reptile print leggings I wore last week which I recommend with equal enthusiasm and confidence.

The T bar leather wrap bracelet is by Danon and I stock it on my Lizzy O website.
There are several wrap bracelets like this and the leather is beautifully soft and supple making them very comfortable to wear. It comes with either a gold or silver heart charm which are set with Swarovski crystals (there is also one with dragonfly and heart charms).  I'm increasingly drawn to the warmer tones of gold coloured jewellery which is becoming ever more on trend.
