New Years Resolution Update!

$

You may remember that I wrote about my new year's resolutions at the start of the year. One month on and I thought it would be useful to remind myself of them and to see whether they have had the desired effect!

The first aim was to switch off my laptop earlier in the evening to enable me to have a little more time to relax, watch tv and read.  I have definitely managed to do that, although I still work later than I perhaps should. That being said, I love every aspect of my work and because my children are spending increasingly more time in their own rooms with homework, revision and the obviously essential YouTube make-up tutorials and Fifa games, it's a good and productive use of my time.

In a similar vein, spending more quality time with my children was also something I vowed to do. This has proved a little harder partly because of their aforementioned schoolwork and personal interests, but I encourage them to come and sit together on my bed before their own bedtime for a cuddle and a debrief. It's lovely and something which benefits the three of us greatly.
I get some time alone with my son when taking him to away football matches, journeys which can take up to an hour. We have a close relationship and and being in possession of my chatty genes and open nature, we are never stuck for words. Time with my daughter is sometimes a look around the shops followed by a coffee pit-stop on a Saturday as well as indulging in our shared love of all programmes medical/forensic/murder and, she is 14 after all, The Kardashians. I would love to find more to do though that they would both enjoy, although bowling and eating out, is something we all enjoy.

My final resolution was to become a member of the gym again and to go frequently. This has proved to be the easiest of all and I can't tell you how much better I feel for it. I've been at least three mornings per week and often swim afterwards. I asked for a programme to help strengthen and tone everywhere but in particular my lower back and shoulders and it has worked wonders. I'm more energised and benefit hugely from the post workout buzz. It definitely sets me up for the day and I hit the ground (or perhaps the dining table from which I work), running once showered and dressed.

I got this fabulous new gym vest from fledgling company Fit For Keeps

The company was set up by two local (to me) mums from Leeds and Harrogate who designed and developed a revolutionary new kind of fitness equipment for use at home.

The Tuffit combines cardio and resistance training but looks like furniture and comes in a choice of two colours of base and fourteen fabric options for the top. It really is a fantastic design and had I not been a gym member would have been very keen to get one, so do take a look.

And February got off to the loveliest start with a delivery of flowers from Adam yesterday. Always an absolute treat and one which reminds me once again how lucky I am to have a romantic man.

Hello! Sorry it's been a few days since my last blog post. I have been busy with my online businesses and the wifi has been appalling and everything, this post included, has taken three or four times as long as it should.

Anyway, my friend Sue is coming for supper this evening with her son whom she takes, along with my son, to a goalkeeping training session some forty miles away, every Friday evening. In return, I cook for them one or two Fridays each month and the adult company, (and a few glasses of wine), is something we both very much look forward to.

My son very kindly took these photographs as soon as he came home from school. The evenings are discernibly lighter than even two weeks ago, so hopefully, I will be able to get more photographs taken and more outfit posts written.

Blush pink and bronze/rose gold are my current favourite hues and I like them combined with the burgundy jeans.

I have now combined my boutique (which sold scarves, wrap bracelets and pendants) with Lizzy O which sells handcrafted jewellery by Danon, so everything is now in one place.
This rose-gold wrap bracelet with buckle is one of my new pieces, added just this week. As always, delivery is free within the UK. Do take a look because everything there is truly beautiful and would make perfect gifts for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day too.

I launched my new website Lizzy O just before Christmas at what was, understandably, a particularly busy time and I haven't really written about Danon Jewellery, the brand which I showcase.

Danon was established in 1975 and was a small workshop which created timeless jewellery. Over the years, Danon has grown and developed and is now sold throughout the world.

Designer Gal Danon maintains the highest level of workmanship and quality. Each piece is made of zinc alloy or pewter and is plated with pure silver, bronze or 24 carat gold. Some are set with Swarowski crystals, semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls.

Dragonflies and more.

All items have others that match so a collection can be built up over the seasons.
UK delivery is free and all Danon items come in a gift pouch or box.
Payment is via Paypal or with major credit cards via the Paypal gateway (a Paypal account is not required- it just facilitates the payment safely and securely).

Also on Lizzy O,  is my own brand of wrap bracelets, pendants and scarves. I choose every design, keeping one for myself to to road test and to enjoy wearing.

The leopard print bracelets are already proving popular as are the rose gold leaf and heart pendants.

To keep everything on just one website, the What Lizzy Loves boutique that I used to sell my accessories on will be closing on March 1st (or sooner if the remaining stock sells out. Currently there are only three scarf designs left over from last season, reduced to £6 each. The stock is depleting rapidly so the site looks rather empty now. They still benefit from free delivery and are reduced simply to enable me to concentrate on Lizzy O and to make room for new stock!)
It's a good time to stock up gifts for end of term teacher gifts, Mothers Day etc or to just treat yourself. There are two lightweight ditsy floral designs and a khaki palm leaf. I noticed khaki continues to be a key colour for spring.

Do take a look at my website and follow me on Instagram for more of Lizzy O!

The Blossoming Gifts Bubblegum Pink Avalanche Roses Bouquet

Florists everywhere will be having a busy few weeks with Valentine's Day in five days' time and Mother's Day, (here in the UK at least),  just three weeks later on 6th March.

Like most women, I love receiving flowers and whether they are cut from the garden, picked up at the supermarket or delivered, the fact that someone has taken the time and trouble to do so, means the world.

These flowers arrived yesterday from Blossoming Gifts, an online company I have been lucky enough to receive flowers from on three occasions now.
This beautiful bouquet is called Bubblegum Pink Roses and is a hand tied arrangement of 12 large headed, bubblegum pink luxury avalanche roses with 3 silvery eucalyptus and 3 dark glossy ruscus stems. It retails at £31.99 and for an extra £20, the bouquet can be made larger with an extra 12 roses and another two stems of ruscus.

They always arrive beautifully presented wrapped in white cellophane, tied with string and secured in a cardboard box.

The pink is the most beautiful blush shade, my current favourite colour. The edges of the petals have a slightly faded look which adds to their delicate vintage charm. They are simple, unassuming and modest and their beauty is whispered rather than shouted.

They are sublime.

And if this isn't perfect enough, this particular arrangement comes with a free box of divine Duc D'o chocolates which taste as good as they look.

Extras like vases, cakes, balloons, mugs, teddies and wine can be added to any order and the website has a huge selection of hampers and other gifts too, including a whole selection which can be personalised.

There are a variety of delivery options so making it very convenient. Standard delivery is free and in most cases will be within 24 hours if ordered by 4pm the previous day. Other delivery options are available for those that would prefer a one hour delivery window.

It would be remiss not to write a post about this beautiful ring that I won in an Instagram giveaway hosted by my fellow blogger, Frances of School Run Style.

The "Sabrina" champagne art deco style ring is from Brilliant Jewellery, Chelsea, just off Sloane square. The range is wide with a lovely selection of both contemporary and Art Deco style jewellery.

My gift arrived beautifully packaged...

It's a champagne stone surrounded by simulated diamonds set in gold vermeil and is even more exquisite in real life.

Hello and happy Friday! It's been another very busy week with 11 meetings and appointments- a mixture of business, pleasure and other necessities.
Last night was most definitely pleasure though. I was lucky enough review The Kings Head in Kettlewell. A little North Yorkshire village famed for its annual Scarecrow festival, it is a beautiful setting for what was a beautiful meal. My brilliant and lovely friend Sally came with me again and as always, we ate, chatted and had a glass or two of wine. Bliss. My review will be in the April issue of Aspire but suffice to say, it was faultless and I highly recommend it.

This dress was a January sales purchase from Mint Velvet. The loose fit was ideal for accommodating the three courses that I enjoyed. I love the dipped hemline and the smudgy print.

Hello and happy Wednesday! It seems a long time since my last blog post which is because our Wifi has been down since I last posted on Friday. After several hours on the phone and by going through seemingly endless processes of elimination, we concluded that it was the router itself that was at fault. Thankfully, thankfully a replacement arrived this morning. Although it must be said that the world did not end and my children went back to basics and played catch with a football then "mucked out" my son's bedroom amongst other analogue activities, (between them heading off to town on two occasions to visit  Costa to use the wifi).

As it happens, the internet will hardly be used for the next few days as I'm going to stay with Adam and my children are going to stay with my parents. We're all as excited as each other about it and it feels like we're going on a little holiday.

I love this blush pink embellished top and the brighter weather that lasted a mere few hours, has most definitely put me in the mood for spring. I'm trying to ignore the fact that the temperature is barely above zero.

My grey diamante wrap bracelet with buckle fastening is a new addition to Lizzy O, my online boutique. It's very lightweight and comfortable and adds a little casual daytime sparkle.

I'm merely going between home (mine, my parents' and Adam's), and cars today so I should avoid frostbitten, and given the fact that it's now raining, wet feet.

I've been driving around for five days in utter comfort having been lent this BMW 2 series Gran Tourer for a review I'm writing for the April issue of Aspire. It's with great reluctance that I have to return it later today because I have loved every moment of driving it. The capacious boot, the option of seven seats and its numerous safety features make it a perfect family car. I'll share my full (and decidedly non-technical), review when it is out in print.

I've got a lovely few days ahead of me as we belatedly celebrate Valentine's Day as well as Adam's birthday. Keep an eye on Instagram and Facebook for mini updates and, all being well, I'll be back with a new blog post on Saturday.
I hope that those of you whose children are on half-term are enjoying it.

Outfit: Great Plains Colourblock Shift Dress for Lunch in Liverpool

I've just returned home from spending a few days with Adam at his home in Liverpool to belatedly celebrate Valentine's day and also his birthday which was on Thursday. It's something we'd both looked forward to for some time and which was as lovely as we'd hoped for.

We spent the morning looking around the city and the shops on what was a beautiful, but bitterly cold day.

We had lunch at Chaophraya, a Thai restaurant which we've visited and enjoyed before and where the loos have the most beautiful fish tanks.

My dress is from Great Plains and is my favourite type of dress because of the versatility it affords. It can be worn with opaque tights and high-heeled ankle boots, with nude tights and brogues or with bare legs and sandals and can be accessorised to suit any occasion, day or night. The simple silhouette lets the bold pattern speak for itself and I know it will become a wardrobe staple.

It is just one of many beautiful dresses at Great Plains fitting the same criteria.
Inspired by "The Art Class", painterly prints and delicate botanicals in Lavender Blush, Lunar Grey, Orchard Purple and Lemon Sugar make for a chic, feminine, understated and very elegant new collection.

Outfit: Cosy Layers and Biker Boots for Formby Beach.

If you read my previous two blog posts you'll know I spent a few days last week staying with Adam at his home in Liverpool. I love the bright lights of this most wonderful city but I also love its proximity to beautiful beaches. After spending Thursday in the city centre, we spent Friday morning blowing away the cobwebs on Formby Beach.

I decided layers would be the best thing, so over this grey crocheted dress, I added a very warm cardigan, which feels much like wearing a blanket as well as thick ribbed tights and a scarf.

The beach was rather exposed and a little windy...

...but the sand was as beautiful as I'd remembered from my previous visit.

We then took a stroll through the Formby Squirrel Park, a National Trust area renowned for its red squirrel population. We did see some but they were either too quick or too far away for us to capture on camera.

The decidedly autumnal looking ground, as nice as it is, makes it hard to believe that spring is on the horizon.

Such a perfect few days and in an area I'm growing to love more and more. It's well worth a visit if you're in the area, even on the coldest of days.

Red Carpet Glamour and My New Occasionwear

$

We are heading towards the end of February and awards season is in full swing, the pinnacle perhaps being the Oscars which will take place this Sunday evening, 28th February. Already we have seen the Baftas, The Elle Fashion Awards and The Brits to name just a few.
I have always loved analysing the red carpet looks afterwards and with a worldwide television and digitial audience of millions, it's little wonder the designers want their work showcasing by the world's most glamorous women.

It would of course be lovely to be dressed by a top fashion designer, but actually, achieving red caret glamour is quite easy.

The following four collages each show on the left hand side, a gown worn to the Baftas earlier this month, (all images taken from the Vogue website), alongside a dress from Kaleidoscope Occasionwear on the right.

I have a few special occasions of my own coming up. There won't be any red carpets, though I would love to strut my stuff down one, but each occasion is equally special and exciting.

The first is a dinner to celebrate my grandparents' 70th wedding anniversary in March. My dad has five brothers all of whom are fathers and five of the six are grandfathers. It means that my extended family is quite large so we have a restaurant booked to accommodate our vast numbers and as the family is spread throughout England, it will be a welcome opportunity to catch up and to celebrate a quite remarkable wedding anniversary.

For this, I have chosen to wear a navy and white striped prom dress from Kaleidoscope. It features a modern Bardot neckline and the cutest grosgrain bow at the waist. Composed of a very stretchy scuba fabric, it seemed a wise choice when I know I'll be eating a three course dinner.
It falls beautifully and is incredibly comfortable. I love this most feminine of shapes and I feel it needs little in the way of accessories.  I like the contrast my orange quilted Mulberry shoes afford but I also have some beautiful floral shoes, a Valentines gift, that I may wear on the night.

The second occasion is the day after and is a Mother's Day lunch with my children and my parents. We have decided to eat at my parents' home and I have chosen, rather unusually for me, a skirt and top, again with a Bardot neckline.

The floral print satin skirt has a mesh underskirt, an exposed gold zip at the bag and a high waist so tops can be worn tucked in or left out.

I'm very much looking forward to wearing both outfits and to styling them differently throughout the season. I think the skirt in particular will prove to be very versatile.

Over the years I've attended a lot of weddings (I refer back to the large family mentioned above and must add that my mum is also from a family of six siblings), black tie events, ladies' days, cocktail parties and balls and feel that choosing the outfit is almost as exciting as the event itself but there are a few things I always bear in mind.

I find that these tips work for almost any occasion and outfit.

1. Make sure the outfit and shoes are comfortable. If it is the slightest bit uncomfortable when trying on, it will only get more so as the day or evening progresses. This is especially true for shoes.

2. See how the outfit looks from behind. A quick snap on a phone will be a much truer reflection than any amount of contorting to see the rear view in a mirror.

3. Choose appropriate underwear. In both of my outfits above, I'm wearing a nude coloured strapless bra, an underwear staple. Make sure it stays put when raising the arms, especially if planning to dance.

4. For an all day event such as a wedding, or one where walking or dancing may be involved, consider taking an alternative pair of shoes that work with the outfit. Ballerina pumps or flat sandals are good options and are relatively easy to carry around. I have a pair of black sparkly fold-up ballerinas that are smaller than my purse when folded and are ideal.

5. Many events have roaming photographers so perfect your pose beforehand to show the outfit off. A full skirt like mine above can be shown to its full potential by placing the hands on the narrowest part of the waist or  by pulling the skirt out to one or both sides. A long straight dress with a slit will be shown to its best advantage by standing tall and placing one leg slightly forwards. Drop the chin very slightly so the eyes are looking slightly upwards and smile. It's the best accessory.

The last few days have been beautiful here in North Yorkshire. Clear, frosty mornings, with blue skies and bright sunshine. It's finally beginning to feel a little like spring, but during these transitional times, I sometimes wonder what to wear on my feet. It's still too cold to go bare-legged if going outdoors, yet, it's nice to wear something a little lighter than winter boots and opaque tights.

The answer to this comes in the form of these divine nude pink leather Chelsea Boots. From Clarks, they are the perfect for wearing with both dresses and nude tights and with jeans and they had their first outing today.

Along with my friend Sally,  I went to a brilliant local cafe to review it for April's issue of Aspire magazine. The Pie and Mash shop is famed in these parts for its excellent, hearty homemade food. Located in Skipton's canal basin the cafe welcomes both locals and tourists alike. I'll share the full review when it's out in print next month but suffice to say, it was very fulfilling!

I chose my outfit with this in mind, opting to wear my maxi sweat dress by Monks on Vacation.

My double stars ring and my stack of bangles are by Danon. Everything mixes and matches and is very versatile looking equally good alone or together.

Do take a look at Clarks to see their range of spring boots and don't forget there is 10% off at Monks on Vacation, plus free delivery with the code Blog10.

I'll be having an early night tonight because I'm attending the Blognix conference in Northamptonshire this weekend. It means a 4.30am wake up tomorrow morning, for me to get on the road and arrive for the start. My wonderful parents are looking after my children, reminding me as always that I have the best family. I'll miss the children terribly- I always do- but I know they're with people who love and cherish them as much as I do, and I rest easy knowing that.

I'll blog about this next week but please keep an eye on my Twitter, Facebook and Instagram which I'll endeavor to update while I'm there!

Have a lovely weekend,

My Weekend Away at the Blognix Retreat, Northamptonshire

Can it really be the last day of February already? Are any of you brave ladies going to propose to their man on this leap year day?

One woman that did just that is my blogging colleague and friend Catherine from Not Dressed as Lamb. Having met her lovely husband, I can say that it was a good decision on her part and they recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.

She and I were among a group of  around 70 bloggers from all genres who attended the Blognix Retreatover the weekend at the Hellidon Lakes Hotel in Northamptonshire

It was a weekend of learning, of inspiration and of sharing new ideas and networking. The primary focus of the retreat was business and well-being and the workshops were the best I've ever attended. Some were quite specific to the blogosphere and some more generic and applicable to anyone in business. I have reams of notes to read through and assimilate and I will share these in blog posts over the next month or so.

After registration on Saturday morning, we attended four presentations, punctuated by coffee breaks and a wonderful buffet lunch.

Following the afternoon sessions, I checked into my room which was spacious with a very comfy bed.

Despite being among fellow bloggers all day, I forgot to get a photograph taken of the outfit I wore during the day, so a mirror selfie must suffice. I wore my colour block shift dress with nude tights and flat Mary Janes, accessorised perfectly, I think you'll agree, with my conference lanyard. (previously, I wore this Great Plains shift dress with black opaque tights and high heeled black ankle boots).

I had a little time to get ready for dinner, which in itself was rather blissful.

One of the biggest and loveliest things about the blogging world is how very supportive it is. Most of us here are working mothers with several income streams so juggling is the norm. Most had connected previously via social media but to meet these wonderful and like-minded women, all aged 40 plus, in person was just wonderful.

We all had a brilliant night. The food was good and the fizz even better but my 4am start meant I was ready for bed way before I'd have turned into a pumpkin.

On Sunday morning, there were three more presentations and workshops which again, proved to be invaluable.

We said our final goodbyes at lunchtime, Catherine took a group selfie and then I headed home back to my children and to iron the school uniforms!

If you are a blogger, I cannot recommend Blognix highly enough. I'll definitely attend any future retreats. It's made me even more determined to succeed as a woman in (a very very tiny) business and to strive to make my blog the best it can be. I am full of ideas and enthusiasm and I hope to implement a lot of new things over the next month or so, some overt and some behind the scenes. I take my hat off to Blognix founders Elizabeth Sellers and Raj Dhokia who organised the event.

In fact I did one thing yesterday which was to open a separate Instagram account for my online jewellery business Lizzy O. If you are on Instagram I would be very very grateful if you would follow me.

I know the official start of spring isn't 1st March, but for me, winter is December, January and February so I'm taking a look at my favourite winter outfits at the start of this new season and although it could hardly feel less like spring,  because snow is falling heavily as I write, the evenings are getting noticeably lighter and the abundance of crocuses and daffodils adds a touch of optimism and some much needed colour after this wettest of winters.

Looking through my photographs, it's quite clear that I love dresses. Almost without exception, I chose to wear a dress for special occasions, although I wear jeans frequently, especially on those days that I'm working from home.

I must thank my children and Adam for being such patient photographers and for knowing that where's there's a wall, there's a way.

Hello, I hope you all had a lovely weekend, especially those that celebrated Mothering Sunday yesterday. I've had a lovely and very busy few days, hence my lack of posting.

On Friday we woke up to quite a lot of snow, but to my children's disappointment, their schools remained open, despite some in the area closing. I went over to Aspire HQ, (The editor-in-chief's dining table in a neighbouring village), and went through the editorial schedules up until November. Amazingly, we discussed bonfire night and Christmas events.

On Saturday evening, we celebrated my paternal grandparents' 70th wedding anniversary. My grandad is 91 and my grandmother is 89. They have 6 sons, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren with another on the way. We are a large family spread throughout the country, so it is always a celebration when we meet and this particular occasion was very special. And rather noisy.

As planned, I wore this navy and white fifties style prom dress with a rose gold sparkly wrap bracelet and floral shoes, a Valentine's gift. The dress hangs so beautifully without creasing courtesy of the scuba fabric. The grosgrain bow at the waist adds a little cute detail and the Bardot neckline adds currency to the style, the cold shoulder being seen in abundance this season.

I love clothes, I really do and I have a lot. I treat them well but in return, I like them to work hard for me, to be versatile and to be worn in different ways at different times of the year.

In a recent post, I styled this floral print satin skirt with a short sleeved black Bardot top, sheer tights and black bow shoes and it looked a little more formal than it does here when styled with a long sleeved top, opaque tights and ankle boots.

It was for a Mother's day lunch at my parents' home on Sunday that I wore this outfit, (the fence and ivy in their garden making a nice change from a brick wall, though I did sink somewhat) and it felt perfect for the occasion.

The Mummy necklace was a Mother's Day gift from my children several years ago. I adore it and wear it often.
These days, they each have their own current account with a debit card and love nothing more than ordering online. My daughter chose a selection of teabags, make-up and chocolate for me, which she presented beautifully in a gift box, while my son ordered a scented candle and had it delivered to himself, having assumed the title of "Lord". He went on to tell me told me that he couldn't decide between that or Admiral.
I was touched beyond belief that both had put so much time and effort into their gifts and I treasure such happy times with my family.

My rose gold wrap bracelet is from my own collection at Lizzy O and is also available in silver. It is super sparkly, something which is hard to capture even in the clearest of photographs.
